  1. Muscular System Jessica Yeh Eleanor Yan

  2. Structures • Skeletal muscles made of myofiber • Myofilaments are threadlike strands that make up muscles • Different types of filaments in muscle strands: thick and thin • Thick filaments made of protein: myosin • Thin filaments made of protein: actin • Separate filaments pull against each other and create a contraction for muscles to function

  3. Types of Muscle Tissue • Smooth Muscles: Controlled by brain and body • Ex. Muscle behind our eyes that keep them focused • Skeletal Muscles: We can control this muscles • Ex. Abdominals • Cardiac Muscles: Involuntary • Ex. Heart

  4. Muscles Smooth Skeletal Cardiac

  5. Muscular Conditions and Diseases

  6. MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY • Inherited Disorder • Patient develops muscle weakness and loss in muscle tissue • Symptoms: lack of motor skills, eye dropping, drooling • If left untreated, patient lose ability use muscles • Muscular dystrophy does not have cure, doctors use physical therapy to slow the progression of the disease

  7. MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

  8. MYOSITIS • Inflammation skeletal muscles • Caused by immune system attacking healthy muscle tissue • Symptoms: rashes, difficulty in speech and motor skills • No cure, but medications and physical therapy lessen the effects • Medications will prevent the immune system from attacking the healthy tissue

  9. COMPARTMENT SYNDROME • Pressure in muscles build, causes decrease in blood flow • Nutrients and oxygen cannot reach certain cells if blood doesn’t flow • Syndrome caused by fractures or badly bruised muscles • Symptoms: numbness, difficulty in muscle movement, burning sensation

  10. COMPARTMENT SYNDROME MYOSITIS

  11. Strengths and Weakness

  12. Strengths • Body stability: keeps us from falling down quickly • Provides heat: keeps our body warm and at the right temperature • Movement: Allows body to move like walk, chew, blink • We give our body nutrition to stay healthy • Allows body to perform actions that we would die without

  13. Eating Healthy Movement

  14. Weaknesses • If muscle is severely damaged, surgery and physical therapy must be used • If injured, would prevent movement and stability in muscle • Can also be damaged to a point of misuse • Fractures and bruises can also lead to dangerous conditions • Muscles help maintain homeostasis but only to certain degrees

  15. Fracture Physical therapy

  16. Healthy Muscular System • Maintain through exercise, healthy diets, protecting muscles from injury • Exercise: helps muscles stay strong and healthy, lowers risk of developing weakness • Diet: Proteins and fruits supply muscles with nutrients • Preventing injuries: warm up before exercise, protective gear, drink lots of water

  17. Thank you for listening! 
