Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Program Mission Establish an organization of post-secondary institutions to promote higher education and to enhance the recognition of the fire and emergency services as a profession to reduce loss of life and property from fire and other hazards.

  3. Is This You? • Have taken many college courses, including fire science and/or general education • Have taken many state, local and NFA training courses • Have achieved various levels of certification AND • All combined, these efforts have moved your fire service professional development in a unified, coherent and planned way?

  4. A Public's Right to Ask As citizens expect their tax dollars to be spent wisely, the public has the right to ask: How many times should the fire department pay for a fire officer to accomplish the same job-related competency?

  5. Have taken the “right” college courses, including fire science and general education Have taken many state, local and NFA training courses, knowing how they fit in a professional development plan or not Have achieved various certifications with little duplications of effort AND All combined, these efforts have moved fire service professional development in a unified, coherent and planned way. Where are we going?

  6. “Inter-operability for Fire Service Professional Development” • The imperative for inter-operability of radios and hoses so that they connect and work together is matched by the need for training, education and certification entities to do the same.

  7. FESHE Strategic Goals Working collaboratively, the professional development community will produce a: • National model for an integrated, competency-based system of fire and emergency services professional development • National model for an integrated system of higher education from associate's-to-doctoral degrees • Well-trained and academically-educated fire and emergency services preparing the nation for all hazards

What the Future Holds continued • States will convene Professional Development summits comprising of:-fire departments-academic fire programs-State associations -other key stakeholders to: -customize the Matrix with their own training and college courses-transpose competencies to State's JPRs -decide how to document sufficient Fire Officer/Prevention-related test preparation, e.g. transcripts, certificates, etc.
