  3. The purpose of South African Indigenous Games Festival is to revive and popularize the games that have appeal to vast sectors of South African communities. The current official competitive sporting codes are unaffordable to the majority and inaccessible for most South Africans to partake in and are largely euro-centric. As such the indigenous games came about to ensure that all South Africans of all races, ages or culture can have the opportunity to be an athlete through the SA Indigenous Games. The Department of Sport is aiming to popularize these games, such that they can also be enjoyed by spectators of all races and ages. The South African Indigenous Games are the carriers of various South African cultural values and heritage and therefore need to be preserved. Together with the department responsible for sport and recreation in the provinces, SRSA has for the last 8 years annually hosted the Indigenous Games Festival in celebration of our cultural diversity and in support of our heritage celebrations in the month of September, the month of Heritage. The 2014 event will showcase unity, sport, culture, youth, volunteerism and team work between the youth and older communities in pursuit of excellence for our future leaders. With years of preparation, dedication and sacrifice, it’s time to recognize the healthy lifestyle choices young Indigenous people from all over South Africa have made. Games Overview
