  3. UNC Wilmington • 11,911 students • 73 bachelor’s degree programs and 32 graduate programs (2 PhD programs witha third on the way!) • 1 of 16 campuses in UNC system

  4. Cape Fear Surfing Archive • Began in February 2002 • Rich local surfing heritage. • UNCW ranked in top 10 of surfing universities. • Special collection of materials and ephemera on local surfing history. • Oral histories • Partnership / Credibility http://library.uncw.edu/surf

  5. The Exhibit • “Country Soul: The Surfing Experience in Southeastern North Carolina” • Identification / collection of materials • Installation • Opening reception and film screening • February 1 – November 30, 2008

  10. Budgetary: all this has a price • Library does not have an exhibits professional • Also doesn’t have a significant budget: “on the cheap” • Set a budget beforehand! • Approach with professionalism and high expectations • Work with others, or not? • Know your limitations

  11. Some tools to consider: • Dry mount press • Dry mount tissue • Foam core • Adhesive spray (3M Super 77) • Other tools

  12. Lessons Learned? • Learn from my mistakes! • Preparation • Patience • Library administration • Set a budget! • Allies • Conflicts with other obligations
