Skill area I - Competence Carry out practical work competently and safely using a range of techniques • Direct observation of practical work (see next slide) • Marks awarded using generic descriptors, provided by OCR (see Appendix B in specification) • Descriptors are applied as ‘best fit’ over the whole range of practical activities to give one overall mark out of 6 • The experiments to assess are provided on a sheet to fill in once the moderator asks for them.

  4. Skill I contd. Practical work over time as a normal and integral part of their study of chemistry. The practical activities must provide opportunities for the candidate to… • carry out a titration; • make thermochemical measurements; • carry out qualitative experiments using test-tubes; • carry out an experiment involving ICT; • prepare an organic compound; • collaborate with other students in solving a problem

Skill I contd. • Teachers must keep a record of the candidates’ achievement over time • specimen to be supplied by OCR (see next slide, provided by OCR, for us to complete) • The activities suggested are those which we ideally have a comment/judgement for • Best fit mark out of 6 is doubled to be out of 12 It is expected there will be a good fit between the mark awarded for skill I and those awarded for skills II and IV

  7. For each class, a sheet for a particular activity can be kept to help when needed later…for example…

Skill areas II and III – • Skill II (Measurement) – carry out quantitative experiments accurately and make and record reliable and valid measurements with appropriate accuracy and precision; • Skill III (Analysis and evaluation) – apply chemical knowledge and processes to unfamiliar situations to analyse and evaluate their own quantitative experiments • These skills are done together – never do skill III before skill II. the information in skill II feeds skill III

Skill areas IV and V – • Skill IV (Observation) – make and record valid qualitative observations with appropriate accuracy and detail; • Skill V (Interpretation) – recognise, recall and show understanding of chemical knowledge to interpret and explain their own qualitative experiments, with due regard to spelling, punctuation and grammar and correct use of technical terms. • These skills are done together – never do skill V before skill IV. The information in skill IV feeds skill V

  10. Skills II, III, IV and V may be assessed in separate activities or they may be assessed together in two separate activities as follows: Skills II and III; Skills IV and V. These activities are provided by OCR and downloaded from the secure site - Interchange.

  11. Which tasks and when? • 3 assessment tasks will be provided for each skill area (excluding skill I – teacher assessed) • These will be available from Interchange • These tasks will be refreshed/replaced in the June of any year ready for the next academic year • Ideally tasks should be carried at appropriate times across the course eg after doing an enthalpy experiment in DF then do an assessment on the same topic (if available that year)

  12. Moderation • Each task is marked out of 12, total max mark 60. The following should be submitted for moderation: • an F333 – Skill I (Competence) – Experiment Description and Mark Sheet (latter from OCR) • an F333 Skill Area Mark Sheet (from OCR) • details of the activities on which of marks in skill areas II, III, IV and V is based • candidates’ work on which marks in skill areas II, III, IV and V is based for those candidates in the moderation sample
