  1. BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY OF TIRANA by: Prof. Velesin PEÇULI April 2006

  2. INTRODUCTION: Anybody who might be interested about higher education history in Albania ought to refer to the Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT). • AUT is the unique center of agricultural higher education and the first higher education center (offering a 5-year education) ever in Albania. • AUT was founded in November 1951, and given the name “Higher State Agricultural Institute”. • In 1991, it was named “Agricultural University of Tirana”. • During a troublesome periodfull of tragic events that culminated with its total destruction (March 1997), AUT affirmed itself like a vigorous higher education institution, like a unique center for graduate education and training, research and agricultural training and extension. • Quantitative and qualitative progress of AUT has been conditioned by political and social economic developments during the second half of the last century up to date.

  3. From this point of view, 54-years of AUT life can be divided into several periods: • 1951-1990 is the period of establishment, construction and consolidation of AUT university campus, located in Kodër Kamëz (7 km far from center of Tirana) under the conditions of isolated and centralized economic development of Albania. By the end of ‘90s, AUT consisted of 4 faculties (Agronomy, Agrarian Economics, Forestry Engineering and Veterinary Medicine) counting about 6 thousand students and 480 academic and supporting staff. • 1991-1997 is the period of energetic, Western European developments of AUT conditioned by the democratic movement of December 1990. AUT has been assisted by two big projects: SARA(USA ), and GTZ (German Government ) and also a considerable number of TEMPUS and other bilateral projects. • March of 1997 represents a tragic moment in the history of AUT. Due to yet non clarified reasons, AUT was totally destroyed turning back to point “zero”. • The period 1997-1999 can be considered as the period of AUT physical reconstructing and survival • 2000-2005 is the period of physical modernization, and university passed from emergency to the academic, conceptual and institutional reformation stage.
