  2. Bell Ringer • Annotate the sheet of paper on your way in. • What is the author’s purpose? • What is the message of the piece? • What stands out to you as you read?

  3. Objective • Today we will be able to close read “The Second Coming,” by W.B. Yeats in order to synthesize a purpose to Things Fall Apart. • Don’t Forget: • khmahoney@cps.edu • You will need a notebook, folder, and writing utensil for this class. • Homework • Complete close read

  4. Review Norms and Responsibilities • Be on Time • Be Respectful • Of people’s privacy • Respect people’s opinions • Be mindful of how you say things • Open minded • No arguing/fighting • Be prepared • Have homework • Have materials (books, paper, pens etc)

  5. Block Party • At this point, find someone with a different quote. • Share each others’ quotes and interpretations

  6. “The Second Coming” • Written by Irish writer, W.B. Yeats in 1920 • Irish writer • Ireland under control of England during this time • Revolution on its way • WWI • Social commentary on world relations • The line of the poem, “Things fall apart,” was the inspiration for the title of, Achebe’s novel.

  7. Close Reading • I want you to now close read “The Second Coming” • Circle words you don’t know. • Use context clues or dictionary to define them • ! By words or phrases that stand out to you/Excite you • ? By words or phrases that you think evoke discussion or you want to know more about or don’t understand. • As you close read you will make these annotations on the reading, and take “side notes” in the right side column. • Think about what you have already read from Things Fall Apart.
