  2. Concepts to discuss with your table group. You WILL be allowed to use your book and the notes you take today on the Schwa test. 1.) The novel begins with the definition found below. How is it foreshadowing? schwa: The faint vowel sound in many unstressed syllables in the English language. It is signified by the pronunciation “uh” and represented by the symbol ə. For example, the a in forgettable, and the o in run-of-the-mill. It is the most common vowel sound in the English language. 2.) What does Calvin do in Chapter 18 to make himself more visible? What is ironic about his attempt to be noticed? 3.) Calvin believed that his mother had literally vanished into thin air. What really happened to Calvin’s mom? Be specific and give details. 4.) Provide at least three pieces of textual evidence for each theme. 1.) The truth is often not what people want it to be, but people will find a way to adapt to it and go on with their lives. 2.) In this world things are often not what they appear to be. 5.) Identify the important events in the plot: exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action/resolution.
