  1. Genesis 4:3-7 Cain’s admonition

  2. If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:7

  3. Cain’s problem wasn’t total hereditary depravity, but what he had done. • Proverbs 24:11-12, Romans 2:5-6 • Acts 10:34-35 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  4. Abel did what God commanded. Cain did not. • Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. • Cf. Romans 10:17 If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  5. God blesses those who do well and punishes those who do not. • Deuteronomy 28:1-14; 15-68 • Ecclesiastes 8:12-13 • Isaiah 3:10-11 • Romans 2:7-11 If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  6. Doing well is in our best interests now and in eternity. • Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  7. Doing well is in our best interests now and in eternity. • 2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  8. If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:7

  9. Cain harbored anger and sinned. 1 John 3:10-12 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.

  10. Cain didn’t respond properly to admonition from the Lord. Proverbs 3:11-12 11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,       Nor detest His correction; 12 For whom the LORD loves He corrects,       Just as a father the son in whom he delights. And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.

  11. Cain didn’t respond properly to admonition from the Lord. Proverbs 9:7-9 7 “ He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself,       And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. 8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you;       Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;       Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.

  12. We must not allow sin to lie at the door. • Isaiah 1:4-6 • 1 Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? • 2 Timothy 2:17-18 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. • 2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.

  13. If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:7

  14. The devil is out to get us. • 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. • Ephesians 6:10-12 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

  15. He can’t force us to do anything. • James 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. • Matthew 13:18-23 And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

  16. Cain had a choice in the matter. He didn’t have to sin. • Neither do we. • 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin… • Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? • 1 Corinthians 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
