  1. What happens when there are too few people in a country? L To understand what is meant by an ageing population To explain the problems of a falling population To discover how Italy coped with a falling population Key terms: Life expectancy, ageing population

  2. We’re all living longer Life expectancy is how long people are expected to live to. Around the world life expectancy is increasing. We are all living longer. But although this may sound good, it brings its problems. Watch the Simpson’s clip and try to think of at least one problem with more people living longer.

  3. Life Expectany in the UK Life expectancy in the UK is 79.01 years. We are living longer than ever before! In the UK $2,992 or £1,888 is spent on every person’s health care every year. When people live longer they need more and more health care. This costs a lot!

  4. We’re all living longer When people live longer it is called an ageing population. It costs a country lots of money. As you saw in the Simpson’s old people often need more medicine, nursing homes and 24-hour care. Listen to the song Old Folks. The song covers many different issues that an ageing population brings. Underline any issues on your copy of the lyrics.

  5. THE OLD FOLKSby A Old people struggle with ICT. They are less able to get jobs. Some old people do not have the income to provide for themselves. They will rely on a pension. Extra care is essential, especially over the winter months. Old people have free fuel in the winter. This costs money. Old people are more frail. They often need to go into care homes like Homer did. This costs money. You did a war, and now you're poor. The old folks are losers, they can't work computers They die in December time. Fall down for no reason.

  6. Coping with an ageing population • An ageing population isn’t a problem if there are enough young people to provide for the older people. • The problem comes when a country gets older and people stop having children. This is very serious and can lead to huge problems. • This is the case in Laviano in Italy.

  7. Questions What does life expectancy mean? What is the life expectancy in the UK? What is an ageing population? Why is it an issue for countries? Where is Laviano? What is Mayor Rocco Falivena offering couples? Why? Why is a balance of young and old people in a population a good thing?
