  1. D0 Operating Costs from CD Stephen Wolbers D0 Finance Board November 18, 2002

  2. Methodology • Identify costs which are associated with D0 computing and are associated with operating the experiment: • Tapes in the STK and ADIC robots • Maintenance for hardware and software • People (mainly computer professionals) required to keep D0 computing operating

  3. People • An MOU was developed in early 2001 to identify effort required to operate D0 computing: • Approximately 33 FTE were identified in a long list of categories. • This was used as a starting point to identify candidate FTE for operations. • The MOU will be updated over the next few months.

  4. Categories of People • People are put into one of 5 categories (Matthias Kasemann list) • 1) - is this person working on the Core-CD-Responsibilities? • 2) - support of scientific user community • 3) - not[1,2,4,5] and would this person be necessary if CDF/D0 would stop operating? • 4) - this person works on PPD-Core_responsibility • 5) - hard to find the category for

  5. People (FTE) for operations • Category 3 of the previous slide: • Network (Computer Professional) • Hardware (Technician) • Code Management Support • Central Mass Storage • Software Products Support • Linux Desktop Support • Software Support

  6. Costing the Components • Tapes – Use the purchase price • Maintenance: • Large hardware systems (SGI, SUN, STK, ADIC) – use the exact costs • ORACLE, CISCO – use lab wide cost divided by 3 (assuming CDF, D0 and rest of the lab are approximately equal users) • People: • Computer Professionals – use midpoint of CP6 • Technicians – use midpoint of Technical Specialist • FY02: As spent, FY03: Estimated

  7. Maintenance • Hardware • d0mino $345K (SGI central analysis) • ADIC robot $58K (ADIC robot + tapedrives) • STK robot $55K (STK robot + tapedrives) • d02ka $32K (SGI NFS server) • d0bbin $9K (SGI for farms) • d0ora1 $9K (SUN database production server) • d0ora3 $6K (SUN development database srvr) • TOTAL $514K • ORACLE/CISCO • Oracle $37K (1/3 of lab total assigned to D0) • Cisco $56K (1/3 of lab total assigned to D0)
