  5. Bible Survey - Obadiah Theme: Punishment of Edom

  6. Bible Survey - Obadiah Obadiah 1:6-7 O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out! All the men allied with you Will send you forth to the border, And the men at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you.

  7. Bible Survey - Obadiah Herod the Great

  8. Bible Survey - Obadiah Obadiah 1:10 You will be covered with shame, And you will be cut off forever.

  9. Bible Survey - Obadiah Obadiah 1:10 Because of violence to your brother Jacob, You will be covered with shame, And you will be cut off forever. Obadiah 1:18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken. Obadiah 1:2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised. Obadiah 1:4 Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

  10. Bible Survey - Obadiah Purpose of Writing: Obadiah wrote to inform Edom of God’s judgment for her sins. Certainly, any individual Edomites who were convicted of their sin could repent and experience God’s forgiveness. This was no doubt a large part of God’s intention in sending Obadiah to prophesy to Edom. Regardless of individual repentance though, the fate of the nation of Edom was sealed. We must also consider how this prophecy against Edom would have been received by the people of Judah. They would have heard the judgment of Edom as divine retribution on those who had rejoiced at their downfall. This would likely have been simultaneously a reassurance of God’s love for them and a warning against any similar selfish behavior.

  11. Bible Survey - Obadiah Christ in Obadiah: • The Violated Victim • The Judge of the Nations • The King

  12. Bible Survey - Obadiah The Violated Victim Obadiah 1:11 On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem-- You too were as one of them.

  13. Bible Survey - Obadiah The Judge of the Nations Obadiah 1:15 For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head.

  14. Bible Survey - Obadiah The King Obadiah 1:19-21 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah the Philistine plain; Also, possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, Who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Will possess the cities of the Negev. 21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the LORD'S. Obadiah 1:17 But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.

  15. Bible Survey - Obadiah Place in the Canon: Historically, Obadiah shows us the continuation of the antagonism between Israel and Edom, as well as presaging the end of the Edomite people. Theologically, Obadiah communicates the justice of God. Devotionally, we are led to respond to God in praise and thanksgiving for his mercy towards us.
