  1. Multiculturalism Appreciating the ideas, beliefs, and customs of other people

  2. An important concept for every young adult to consider is multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is a situation in which all of the different cultural or racial groups in a society have equal rights and opportunities and none are regarded as being inferior or less important.

  3. A Shrinking Globe Technology allows almost instant access to countries and cultures around the world. It should be easier, therefore, to develop a willingness to explore and to accept the advantages that people of other countries and cultures have to offer.

  4. Did you know? • The United States is the 3rd largest country in the world. • A child is born in this country every 8 seconds and a person dies every 12 seconds. • There are over 350 languages spoken in this country. • More than 700,000 individuals immigrated to the United States last year. • So, the question that we need to consider is this one: • How do we become responsible global citizens who understand and appreciate the histories, values, customs, and perspectives of other countries and immigrants.

  5. We Need to change the idea of the United States as a “Melting Pot” The idea of a melting pot suggests that people coming into this country must give up much of their heritage and culture to become Americans.

  6. Instead, maybe we should consider America as a “Stew.” A stew is a unique combination of different vegetables, with each contributing something special to the unique and overall taste. If the stew were only potatoes it would be boring and if it were only vegetables, it would still not be the same as we expect. It takes the beef, the broth, and all of the vegetables (along with some time) for the stew to come together.

  7. If the United States is a “stew”, then, each individual coming to this country would be encouraged to keep the important parts of his or her heritage and to continue to celebrate his or her unique cultural traditions. In many large cities, there are already areas that encourage our newest citizens to continue such traditions. These cities often have areas, such as Chinatown, Little Ukraine, and Little Italy. Little Italy, Syracuse, New York

  8. How have we benefited from other cultures? • An Irish immigrant invented the automobile. • An Irishman also invented milk chocolate. • African slaves actually taught American farmers how to cultivate rice and how to use open grazing for cattle. • Boxing was invented in Egypt. • Baseball was invented in England. • Ice cream was created about the same time in ancient Rome and Russia. • The Greeks gave us the idea of large sporting events, like the Olympics. • A form of pizza was first found in China and probably brought by Marco Polo to Italy.

  9. Being a population of great diversity is what makes us unique and strong!
