  5. Outcomes- Session 1 • Explain the features of good teachers; departments and schools. • Know the difference between leadership and management • Understand the significance of the difference • Have an overview of how these fit together- developing your vision

  6. TASK 1 • What are features of good- • Teachers • Departments • Subject leaders • Schools ? • You have 10 minutes to discuss and agree one of the above. Write on flip chart paper and display round room. Be prepared to feed back.

  25. Stress / time management game We put you under pressure! In teams decide what you will do, using the resources available. You have 3 mins to look at the resources available and to sort out any team strategies. It’s time to play STRESS!

  26. Q1) Details are passed to you, by the Head teacher, about a competition for Einstein year run by the ASE. What do you do ? • Say will you would do and WHY. You have 3 mins.

  27. Q2) You have recently been appointed as a HOS. A current member of the dept. also applied for the job. Now you are in post they keep doing tasks that you consider are yours i.e. set lists etc. What will you do and why? You have 3 mins

  29. Round 2 Q4) Guess the word/taboo One team member has to come out and describe as many words as possible to their team in 2 mins Oops! Don’t say it!

  30. Q5) You have a deadline for the departmental improvement plan / meeting with the Head the next day and a friend calls up who you haven’t seen for 5 years who is over from Australia. They are travelling to London the next day. What will you do?

  31. 6) Pictionary round Draw the techniques for emergency coping strategies. You have 3 mins :- Try to get teams to say / guess key words (See Emergency coping strategies sheet)

  32. 7) You are working on the departmental timetable and a Head of Year comes into your office wanting to talk about pupil X. What do you do? (See interruptions sheet)

  33. Q8) Team round (3 mins) Bonus points for entertainment value! You have been in the job for a year and have really tried as hard as you can. You have a yearly report to write, a pile of books to mark, one NQT has just been to see you in tears because they don’t feel they are coping with one class; you have 50 e-mails to reply to, your lessons to plan for the following day, a good member of the department has just told you they are resigning just before half term so you have a new post to advertise and you have just found out that it is likely that the school will undergo OFSTED.You get home and your partner is upset that they don’t see you any more and that you are not as happy as you used to be. They are worried as they haven’t been able to get the shopping. Your son asks you to play football. What do you do?……& why?
