  1. MATTERS OF THE HEART SERIES

  2. A CURE FOR HEART DISEASE I Samuel 10;1-10

  3. “As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart” v.9 (NKJV)

  4. BACKGROUND Nation of Israel was made up of 12 autonomous tribes. Elders of the tribes became the governing authorities. Samuel the High Priest was asked to establish a Monarchy for Israel. Samuel anointed Saul from the tribe of Benjamin and the son of Kish as the first King of Israel.

  5. I. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THE HEART?

  6. The heart is mentioned 770 times in the Bible. “The place to change the world is to begin with one’s heart and work outward from there.” Robert Pirsig Hebrew Psychology The heart is the seat of personal will, feeling and thinking.

  7. A. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT THE HEART IS THE SEAT OF OUR EMOTIONS • Emotions change with our feelings and • come and go with circumstances. • As Christians we work through our emotions. • God gives us our emotions and allows us to experience highs and lows so we will learn to rely on Him. So our faith will mature.

  8. B. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT THE HEART IS THE PLACE WHERE IMPORTANT DECISIONS ABOUT LIFE, LOVE AND FAITH ARE MADE • “My mind is telling me to do one thing, but • my heart is telling me to do another.” • We have all inherited a disease which will eventually destroy our hearts and our lives unless it is properly diagnosed and dealt with. • SIN

  9. C. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS ARE FULL OF SIN • “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, and evil eyes, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these things come from within and defile a man.” • Mark 7 • “Sin and corruption would bubble up out of my heart • as naturally as water bubbles up out of a fountain.” • John Bunyan • Every sinful act we could possibly • ever imagine originates in the heart.

  10. D. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS HAVE BEEN BLINDED BY SIN • “No longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.” • Ephesians 4:17, 18 • If we have sin in our heart it is impossible • for us to understand the love of God. • We might have an area of our heart that is not right with God and it can cause us to have a wrong perception, or wrong view of God’s truth because the blood of Jesus Christ is not able to flow the blocked up area.

  11. E. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS ARE FULL OF PRIDE, AND WARNS US OF THE CONSEQUENCES • “Whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, • him will I not endure.” Psalms 101:5 • “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12 • Pride is a “Spiritual Cancer which eats up love and contentment.” • “Pride is a telescope turned the wrong way. It magnifies self and makes the heavens small.” • C.S. Lewis

  12. F. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS ARE REBELLIOUS • Throughout their history the Israelites • rebelled and turned away from God. • Parable of the Prodigal Son • Rebellion is a matter of choice • It was a rebellious attitude that led Adam and Eve to make the choice to eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, even though they knew that their actions were contrary to the instructions that the Heavenly Father had given them.

  13. G. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS ARE FULL OF IDOLATRY • Some Christians are more interested in satisfying • their fleshly desires, than they are about strengthening • their relationship to the Lord. • Many don’t even realize they are sinning against God. • ANYTHING we put before our relationship • to God becomes our idol.

  14. H. THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT OUR HEARTS CAN BECOME HARDENED • The Devil succeeds in hardening our hearts by making us look at our situations, or making us look at other people and their short- comings. • Instead of looking to God and His ability to heal a heart we begin to judge the heart of others, and fail to judge our own heart. • Our personal heart can become hardened • because we don’t stop to examine it. • PHARAOH’S HARDENED HEART

  15. II. WHAT IS GOD’S ATTITUDE TOWARD OUR HEARTS?

  16. “For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7

  17. A. GOD KNOWS OUR HEARTS • Psalms 44:21 • Andy’s English Valet • There is a contrast between the world’s love and God’s love. • The world see’s our sacrificial service, our grace filled love for one another. When it is poured into our hearts it can’t be hidden because that is the nature of God’s love. • Since God is the only one who really knows our hearts • then we need to let Him be the judge of others too.

  18. B. GOD PREPARES OUR HEARTS TO RECEIVE THE GOSPEL MESSAGE • “Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” • Revelation 3:20 • We have an invitation for sinners and saints. • God wants us to receive His forgiveness everyday.

  19. THE DEFECT OF OUR HEART IS SIN SOME SYMPTOMS • Loss of direction • Foul or offensive language • Lack of peace and joy • Selfishness • Violent behavior • Depression or confusion in the mental component • Fearfulness • Idolatry • rebellion

  20. THE MANUFACTURER • “He is not liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory authorized repair and service free of charge to correct the SIN defect.” • “The Repair Technician, Jesus has generously offered to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs. No additional fee will be required.” • “Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN by clicking on the REPENTANCE button.”

  21. THE MANUFACTURER • “Next, download ATONEMENT into the heart component, from the Repair Technician, whose name is Jesus, No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self control.” • “Please see the operating manual, sometimes referred to as the BIBLE for further details.” • “WARNING: Continuing to operate the human being unit without correction will void any manufacturer warranties, exposing the unit to dangers and problems too numerous to list and will result in the human unit being permanently and irrevocably damaged.”

  22. THE MANUFACTURER • “For free emergency service, call on JESUS.” • “DANGER: Human units containing the SIN defect will not be allowed into Heaven, and will be thrown into the fiery furnace. Therefore we strongly suggest you take the appropriate measures sooner rather than later. Thank you for your immediate attention.”

  23. The only cure for heart disease is an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ that is committed and dedicated to His Word.
