  3. Question • What was the Monroe Doctrine?

  4. Answer • U.S. foreign policy under James Monroe: • Europe: stay out of our business, we’ll stay out of yours. • No new European colonies in the New World • Support American democracies

  5. Question • How did Monroe set the tone for how the USA should deal with Europe for the next century?

  6. Answer • Monroe Doctrine • Europe: Stay out of our business, we’ll stay out of yours. • We fought wars against Europe: French-Indian, Revolution, 1812 before. Now we are going to fight wars against our neighbors to get bigger.

  7. Question • Why did admitting Missouri as a Slave State almost cause a civil war?

  8. Answer • It would have unbalanced the number of Free and Slave States in Congress. When they were balanced, they could keep each other under control.

  9. Question • How did Congress solve this problem?

  10. Answer • Missouri Compromise: • Missouri comes in as a Slave State and Maine comes in as a free State to keep things even.

  11. Question • Was Washington, DC always the capital? Any of our presidents never live there as president?

  12. Answer • New York was the capital for many years after the Revolution. Washington, DC became the capital after a deal was struck between Hamilton and Jefferson. • Washington did not live in D.C. because it was not built yet.

  13. Question • What was unusual about the 1800 election? Who won? How did he win?

  14. Answer • Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in the electoral college. Jefferson was supposed to be President and Burr V-P. • Burr refused to step aside. So, the House of Representatives had to break the tie. • Jefferson won, because his rival, Alexander Hamilton, decided to throw Federalist support behind him.

  16. Answer • No: He got us into the War of 1812 and we almost lost it. • Yes: Made the USA safe for business by supporting contracts (Dartmouth vs. Woodward) • Yes/No: The USA government was allowed to read the Constitution loosely (McCullouch vs. Maryland)

  17. Question • Why was Andrew Jackson important during the War of 1812? Why was he important afterwards?

  18. Answer • War of 1812: Won the Battle of New Orleans, the only significant U.S. victory of the war. • After: Became a famous general, Native-American fighter, and President.

  19. Question • What did Dolly Madison (President Madison’s wife) take from the White House during the War of 1812?

  20. Answer • She rescued a famous portrait of Washington and other important papers.

  22. Answer • The British tried to gain Baltimore Harbor by bombarding the fort. • Francis Scott Key watched the battle and wrote the Star Spangled Banner.

  32. Answer • Yes! Jefferson was as D-R. He believed that the Constitution should be read strictly. • It did not say specifically in the Constitution that the President had the power the buy land from other countries.

  34. Answer • He did not go to war. He had the Embargo Act passed, which banned trade with all foreign nations. This hurt the U.S. economy greatly.

  36. Answer • This was when British warships stopped U.S. ships and forced U.S. sailors in the British navy.

  37. Question • How does the information that Lewis and Clark bring back from their trip aide in the westward expansion/movement of people in the western parts of the United States?

  38. Answer • They brought back maps and knowledge of what lie in the West. Now people knew where to settle to farm and hunt. They knew what Native Americans were friendly, etc.

  39. Question Who was Sacagawea? Describe the importance of her on Lew and Clark’s mission?

  40. Answer • She was their Shoshone guide and translator. She assisted them by helping them deal with various Native American tribes along the journey. This was crucial to the mission’s survival.

  42. Answer • Native Americans, wild animals, starvation, winter, mountains, waterfalls, rapids, etc.

  44. Answer • They started from St. Louis, and followed the Missouri River west to the Rocky Mountains. Then, the followed the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean.

  46. Answer • Explore the new Louisiana Territory • Inform the Native Americans that the USA now owned this land • Figure out how to survive/make a living out west

  48. Answer • USA has to go into debt to buy it • A century of wars with the Native Americans
