An Academic Service Department We provide general IT and telecommunication facilities to support teaching, learning, research and administrative activities We work with: The MyBirkbeck student centre Schools – Support for learning technology Library – Network access to electronic resources Disability Office – Special Needs Students’ Union – our IT training supplements their Study Skills workshops

  3. IT Service Desk • Email, phone, and web based help • Password reset • Documentation • Print/Photocopy Recharging • Consumables

  4. Username and password • For access to all services, both on campus and from home • Sent to you automatically via email • Password change via web • Remember it, or keep it securely, when you come to College • Do not tell anyone else your password

  5. College Computing Regulations You must make yourself familiar with the regulations By logging in to our systems you are agreeing to abide by the regulations Failure to comply could lead to loss of access

  6. My Birkbeck Profile • Enrol online • Pay fees • Check your contact email address • Update your home address • See study information and timetables • Request a Birkbeck Gmail Account www.bbk.ac.uk/mybirkbeckprofile

  7. Email • Optional – use My Birkbeck Profile to set your contact email address • Web based (Gmail) • Links from ‘quick links’ on both ITS and MyBirkbeck home pages

  8. PC Access • 10 ITS managed rooms in Malet Street • Open-access computers in Birkbeck Library • All available when not in use for teaching – see timetable outside the room or online www.bbk.ac.uk/its/rooms

  10. Applications www.bbk.ac.uk/its/rooms Microsoft Office 2010 Acrobat Internet Explorer & Firefox Specialist applications such as Photoshop, SPSS and programming languages

  11. Wireless & Mobile www.bbk.ac.uk/its/rooms Wireless network – Birkbeck-WAM Covering most of the teaching and public areas, including the Library Self-registration via browser for most devices (ITS username & Password required)

Printing and Photocopying • From Photocopiers (Library and IT Service Desk) • From workstation rooms and the wireless network (PC only) • Chargeable service 5p per page (black and white) 25p per page (colour) • Recharge your print credit • Credit card on Web (£5 minimum) • Cash using recharging machine on the 1st floor of Library or the 4th Floor by the workstation rooms in the Malet St building • Cash at IT Service Desk

  13. Course materials & reading lists • Many courses use the BLE (Moodle) to disseminate materials • Direct access via www.ble.ac.uk, link from ‘quick links’ on ITS, MyBirkbeck and Birkbeck home pages

  14. Training • Termly programme of workshops (including Word, Photoshop, PowerPoint) • Book online or at the IT Service Desk • Drop-in sessions available through term-time • Documentation on ITS website for self-training • Web based training via BLE (Moodle)

  15. Specialist support • Ergonomic and specialist equipment is provided around the College, either in workstation rooms or at the IT Service Desk • Assistive Technology support available by appointment www.bbk.ac.uk/its/disability

  16. Networked Disk Storage • Ensure your data is always backed up • Initial allocation 50 Mbytes (Check quota from the desktop icon) • Use My Documents area, which is backed up regularly – backups can be retrieved using Windows Explorer • Quota can be increased subject to requests via School representatives • Use USB flash drives to store documents you want to use elsewhere; or use the VPN

  17. Access from home • Web-based services are available from any internet-ready computer • Email (Gmail) • BLE (Moodle) • Ejournals (via the eLibrary) • Birkbeck My Documents storage space via VPN www.bbk.ac.uk/its/vpn
