  1. Location Based Systems Gary Cullen

  2. overview • Introduction to Location Based Systems • Global Positioning System (GPS) • Indoor Location Based Systems • Extending the Range of Indoor Location Based Systems

  3. Introduction to Location Based Systems • Are we there yet? • Untethered Devices • Developing for a mobile world • Location Based • Social Media • Gaming • Marketing • Augmented Reality – Google Glasses www.loopt.com www.geocaching.com www.foursquare.com

  4. Global Positioning System (GPS) • Constellation of 29 Satellites • 1973 – NASA – Global Coverage • Accuracy • Standard GPS can provide accuracy of better than 7.8m 95% of the time (Venkatraman et al. 2010) • WAAS can provide accuracy of better than 3 meters 95% of the time (FAA 2010) • Nationwide Differential GPS System (NDGPS) currently under development, argues that it can provide 10-15 centimetre accuracy (NAVCEN 2012) • Unusable in Indoor environments

  5. Tommy Bowe’s bodycheck

  6. Indoor Location Based Systems • Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) (Ekahau, 2012) • Using existing infrastructure • Wi-Fi enabled Smart Phones, Laptops and Tablets • Problems with Wi-Fi Localisation • Noisy environment • An Infrastructure designed for network coverage not for locating • Signal Reflection\Refraction

  7. Extending the range of indoor location based systems • Research Hypothesis The genesis for this research is the inability of an indoor location based system to locate devices beyond the range of the fixed devices that are used to calculate the position of the mobile devices on the network. The hypothesis advocates a solution that extends the range of Indoor Location Based Systems using Mobile Devices at the extremities of Cells that have a priori knowledge of their location, and utilizing these devices to ascertain the location of devices beyond the range of the fixed tracking device, but within range of the localised Mobile Devices. This results in a cooperative localisation technique where participating devices come together to aid in the determination of location of devices which otherwise would be out of scope.
