The Preterite Tense. USES. To talk about specific actions completed at a specific time in the past. Example: Ayer yo fui al cine. Yesterday I went to the movies. To talk about successive completed events .

  2. USES • To talk about specific actions completed at a specific time in the past. Example: Ayer yofui al cine. Yesterday I went to the movies.

  3. To talk about successive completed events. Example: Estamañanayo me desperté a lascinco, me levanté a lascinco y diez, me duché, me vestí, me cepillé los dientes y salí para la escuela. This morning I woke up, got up, showerd, got dressed…etc.

  4. The beginning and end of certain states or situations. • Example: La claseempezó a lassiete. • The class began at seven. • Example: Después de la cena, ellase durmió. • After dinner she fell asleep.

  5. Expressions Used to Help Identify the Preterite Tense • ayer – yesterday • anteayer- the day before yesterday • anoche – last night • la semanapasada – last week • el añopasado- last year • el fin de semanapasado – last weekend

  6. hace + time expression “ago” Yoviajé a Españahace 2 años. I traveled to Spain two years ago.

  7. How do I conjugate in the Preterite Tense? • It’s easy! You follow the same rules as the present tense. • Take the infinitive: hablar • Drop the ending • You are left with the stem • Add the preterite endings to the stem and you are done!

  8. Preterite Tense Endings“-AR” VERBS -é -amos -asteis -aste -aron -ó

  9. comprar – to buy compré compramos compraste comprasteis compró compraron

  10. “car,gar & zar verbs" • Verbs that end in “-gar, -car, -zar” have a spelling change before the -é ending of the “yo” form. • c  qu g  gu z  c • There are no stem changes in ”-ar” verbs of the preterite tense.

  11. buscar – to look for busqué buscamos buscaste buscasteis buscó buscaron

  12. pagar – to pay pagué pagamos pagaste pagasteis pagó pagaron

  13. empezar – to begin empecé empezamos empezaste empezasteis empezó empezaron

  14. jugar – to play jugué jugamos jugaste jugasteis jugó jugaron

  15. Conjugating reflexives • Same rules for reflexives: • levantarse • Remove the “se” • Drop the ending • Add the endings to the stem • Me levanté / te levantaste

  16. Conjugating in the Preterite Tense • Same rules for “gustar” • The verb “gustar” is used the same way it is used in the present tense. • You use the third person singular and plural forms. • gustó / gustaron

  17. Conjugating in the Preterite Tense • Me gustó la película ayer. • ¿Te gustaron los pantalones?

  18. Tense Endings“-ER/-IR” VERBS -í -imos -isteis -iste -ieron -ió
