  1. How were slaves caught? Key Words Objectives: Explain who captured slaves and why? Describe different ways of capturing slaves Analyse why this work was dangerous

  2. Starter – Images on slavery You are going to see some slides in moment that will tell you the story of slavery, can you work out what they are???

  3. Manacles Manacles were used to tie slaves hands together and also their feet, they were heavy and made of metal so extremely uncomfortable..... Slaves would have to walk and sleep wearing their manacles

  4. Slave Ships Slave ships were horrible, humans were packed into the bottom of the ship, as many as would fit laying down. Many slaves died of illness before even reaching America, their bodies were thrown overboard with no burial ceremony.

  5. Slave sale poster Selling slaves was an rich business, although the work was dangerous many men sold slaves because of the wealth it brought them. Therefore slave merchants would announce the arrival of new slaves and advertise auctions to ensure the highest bidders attend.

  6. Slave Sale Slaves were sold through auctions when ships returned from Africa. Rich men came to bid for the slaves they wanted.

  7. Flogging Many slaves were brutally beaten and punished by their masters.....

  8. Abolitionist Poster – Britain 1780’s Some British campaigned for the abolition of slavery in the 1780’s. Slavery was not completely abolished until 1888.

  9. Task One - Think!! How many ways can you think of to capture Africans in their home environment and how would you then transport them to waiting ships?

  10. Task Two– Listening Listen to the clip about to be played:- What can you hear? What do you think is happening? How do these sounds make you feel?

  11. Task Three– Questions and DVD Write down the following questions and try to answer them whilst watching the ROOTS DVD. How was KunteKinte captured? What was the environment like? Who was involved in his capture? What weapons can you see being used?

  12. Task Four– Pair work You have about 7 minutes in pairs to discuss and answer the following question. I will randomly choose 5 pairs to share their answers so make sure your working hard! Why might African tribes or peoples involve themselves in the capture of other Africans to be sold into slavery?

  13. Task Five Why was capturing slaves a difficult task? In pairs look at the reasons below and put them in order of most to least dangerous reason. The African jungle and land had new creatures, food and diseases unknown to the white man The African jungle and environment was strange to the white men African tribes knew of the white man’s presence, they were prepared to fight African tribes had weapons but they were not as sophisticated as the white mans weapons The land did not have clear roads or routes

  14. Home Learning Find a picture of a slave ship. EXTENSION HOMEWORK: Find out how long it would take for a slave ship to reach America.
