  1. Fedora Content Models for the National Science Digital Library Data Repository Fedora User’s Group Meeting Copenhagen, September 28, 2005 Carl Lagoze Cornell Information Science

  2. NSDL Context

  3. A bit of NSDL background • Mission: “Improve Science, Math, Engineering education through digital libraries” • Original NSDL solicitation in 1999 • Over 180 projects funded • Core integration (Columbia, Cornell, UCAR) charged with providing organizational, technical infrastructure • CI (Cornell) funding through 2006 • http://www.nsdl.org

  4. STEM Resource Information in Context …how has it been aggregated …who used it …how is it described & rated …how is it classified …how was it used …how does it related to standards …what has it been used with

  5. Information Network Overlay

  6. NSDL Data Repository (NDR) • Fedora-based implementation of information network overlay • Content model to represent NSDL information entities and relationships • Extensive use of resource index and new oai service

  7. Fedora NDR • Objects: agents, metadata items, resources, services (metadata providers), aggregations • Relationships: metadataFor, providedBy, memberOf, representedBy + ontology-specific • Disseminations: metadata transformations • OAI harvesting: both static and generated metadata formats • Authentication/Authorization: Collections and services manage their own repository content, contribution of annotations, new content

  8. Live Demo • http://fedora.nsdlib.org:8380/repository/bigBang.htm

  9. Metadata in the NDR • Multiple formats • static (ingested from provider) • generated/crosswalked • Multi-sourced • de-dupped • Retain branding of metadata • OAI-PMH harvesting

  10. Resources, Metadata, Metadata Providers

  11. Metadata Content Model

  12. proai – Fedora 2.1 OAI Service • Old OAI service – harvest only system DC • Support for arbitrary metadata formats • static data streams and disseminator generated • exploits queries to resource index • proai.properties configuration

  13. proai configuration

  14. Collections and Aggregations • Set basis • Semantic basis • Agent associated

  15. Aggregation Model

  16. Annotation/Reviews • Unstructured metadata about a resource • Exists as resource and annotation • Separate agent provenance from annotated resource

  17. Annotation Model

  18. The SDSC Archive • Uses Storage Resource Broker (SRB) • Monthly snapshots of crawlable content • Identifies resource as collection of related web pages • Can’t access protected content, robots.txt blocked, etc. – no requirement for NSDL projects to participate • REST interface for read access (but not submission – yet)

  19. Integrating SDSC Archive into NDR
