  2. Make sure that you are viewing this in “Slide Show” format. Click on “Slide Show” and push “from beginning”. Move through the presentation by pushing on the “up” and “down” arrows” on your keyboard Click me All roads lead to Rome! But Rome is influenced by everyone!

  3. Rome is in the center of Everything Click Here Macedonia Rome (the city) Mesopotamia • Rome is located on the Italian Peninsula. • Rome is located in the Western Mediterranean basin. • Greece is located in the eastern Mediterranean basin Egypt Athens Sparta

  4. The Italian PeninsulaAll roads lead to “Roma” Click me • Rome starts and is centered on the Italian Peninsula (modern Italy - “the boot”) • Rome is protected to the north by the Alps Mountains • Italy has two river valleys in which to grow: (1) the Po River and (2) the Tiber River • Rome is surrounded by water (the Mediterranean)

  5. The five major advantages for Roman civilization(location, location, location!) • The central location of Italian peninsula in the western Mediterranean basin creates a natural crossroads for trade and cultural exchange. • Rome is distant from other eastern Mediterranean powers during its early years. • The Mediterranean Sea provides protection and offers ports for trading, • The Alps provide protection from invading land forces, • The Po and Tiber River valleys provide optimum areas for settlement Click Here

  6. Let the stealing (I mean “cultural diffusion”) begin! Click Here • Roman civilization does not have its own religion or mythology at first. • Roman religion is instead based on Greek religion as passed down possibly from Livius Andronicus (a freed Greek slave between 272 to 207 BCE/BC. • Just like Greek gods and goddesses, Roman gods and goddesses provided explanations of natural phenomena, human qualities, and life events • Unlike Greek mythology, • Roman mythology influences western symbols, art, architecture, literature, politics, and culture • Romans create multiple additional gods for almost every aspect of daily life) Look familiar?

  7. Greek versus Roman mythology Click Here
