  1. Community Involvement in teaching and learning Gernia van Niekerk Manager: CEPA gernia.niekerk@up.ac.za Department of Community Engagement

  2. Universities all over the world are incorporating Community Service with academic programs. This is generally referred to as: Community Engagement.

  3. WHY? The development of the individual, both student and community members as individuals Development of the community

  4. HOW DO WE CHANGE FROM THIS ? Research intocommunity Community asobject Teaching aboutthe community Student as onlooker

  5. Context and problem statement:

  6. In South Africa communities are stuck in a self destructive poverty cycle - could not keep up with rapid social transformation - political change - devestating health problems and get to know and understand the leadership structures.

  7. - the strains of complying with outside pressure and expectations - lack of knowledge and skills - lack of self-determination, willpower and inner strength due to chronic disappoint- ments... and get to know and understand the leadership structures.

  8. HOLISTIC INTEGRATED APPROACH TO COMMUNITY AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT –A TRANSCENDING PROCESS TO SPIRITUAL AWARENESS

  9. * Development of the individual both interior and exterior* Community development both interior and exterior* Development paths of the individual and the community* Body, Mind, Spirit

  10. Development of the Individual is an Descending process Universal / communitydevelopment is an Ascending process Universe Individu

  11. Development of the Individual is an Descending process Universal / communitydevelopment is an Ascending process Universe Individu Spirit Mind Body

  12. There are 2 movements of development# individual development, which is a descending processand # universal development, which is an ascending process

  13. Individual development – an interior descending path of Spirit through SoulPiercceto become individual Spirit Mind Body

  14. The exterior cognitive development process Non-dual (the way up is the way down *Develops 49- Causal (I = We and We = I). *Develops 35-49 Subtle (Growth/development) motion, synthesize/ harmonize *Develops 21-35 Vision-logic (integration, flow). *Develops 11-21 (Formal operational) Societal/automatic development stops here for about 95% of all people. “Care” driven (sensitivity). *Develops between 3-10 years of age. “Success” driven (achievement). *Develops between 3-10 years of age. (Concrete operational) Societal/automatic development stops here for about 75% of all people. “Order” driven (need for discipline, Higher power) *Develops between 3-10 years of age. (Representative mind) “Power” driven (need for self- empowerment) *Develops between 1-3 years of age. (Emotion/self- esteem.) “Safety” driven (need for safety) *Develops between 1-3 years of age. (Fantasizing) “Instinct” driven. (basic need to survive) *Develops between 0-18 months. (Sensori-motor.)  Gernia van Niekerk

  15. Development levels emerged first as individual development. DESCENDING Build a critical mass and become integrated into culture. ASCENDING

  16. Universal / community development – an ascending path starting from Body to Mind to SpiritPiercce Spirit Mind Mind is influenced by external factors…. Body

  17. Levels of awareness and the ability to solve problems. A sense for “harmony” creates meta-solutions for transformation and development. “Flexibility and flow” allows for transformation and accommodate complexity. “Sensitivity” is needed to care. A sense of continuous “striving” is needed for improvement of one’s own life… Living in the “right way” to have a meaningful and purpose in life. A healthy “self-esteem” is required to take charge of own life. A sense of “protectiveness” is needed for to create healthy and safe family and community constellations. Sharpening of “instincts” is needed for survival.

  18. Awakened intelligences ind/group….. Emerge as a post-information mindset to blend unique and collective motivations; balance human needs with Earth’s limitations; accept our diversity (body- mind-spirit); take collective action to address poverty/illness (- whole view alignment and synergy.) Emerge due to concern about needless technological complexity; dehumanization of people into fixed categories; when the human drive to expand comes into conflict with the course of nature; to “save” the individual and Earth; special “projects” have to be launched to accomplish this (– integrate processes.) Arises in response (“activists”) to abuse of humans/nature as a resource. Activists for equality /social services/humanistic programs/nature conservation (- explore inner self and equalize other.) The “First World” component: to create a better life for self; develop scientific/economic/innovative ideologies (- analyze and strategize.) Exist to control compulsivity of individuals and punish bad actions; classify ideas/people /events in “good” or “evil” (- bring order.) All religion Appears because of dominance by others to defend one’s independence and give rise to assertiveness (- express self and be strong/proud.) EMPIRES Arise out of “fear” when feeling threatened and confused in a mysterious world and give rise to all common superstition (- seek safety among others.) TRIBE Appears when individual is profoundly stressed by catastrophe, poverty, illness or unfathomable change (- sharpen instincts to survive.) CLAN

  19. Holistic alignment, harmony and synergy. Flexible (flow) system. Social network. PIIGS, G8.. Functional hierarchy. Federation, EU, VSA Authoritarian hierarchy. Nationality. Empire. Group consisting of “close ones” (Tribe). Clan.

  20. Thus, there are 2 opposite movements involved –

  21. The Path of Ascend are driven by respect and love.

  22. Thus, love thy neighbour... really means – respect thy neighbour

  23. Reaching up to the higher in love and respect is the driving force up ward – Ascend.Compassion of the higher reaching down to the lower is the driving force down ward – Descend.

  24. Can we develop without help?

  25. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you, and you don’t know how and why. The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery.Allbert Einstein.

  26. Individual Development Path Dubble spiral - Cornu spiral SCIENTIFIC INTUITION Spirit Mind Body 26

  27. Dubble helix Exterior individual Interior individual Spirit - BE Mind - DO Body – WANT TO HAVE (NEED) 27

  28. Paradigms of thinking of individual (Inner development of individual) Symptomatic problems - squatter camps. Counter -logic Counter operational. Insensitive to self /other No skills / no income No sense of purpose / crime Self destructice behaviour / drugs Unsafe family & com. constellations Serious health & survival problems 2 1 3 4  Gernia van Niekerk

  29. Paradigms of thinking of individual (Inner development of individual) - Symptomatic problems in a self sustainable community  Gernia van Niekerk

  30. Body Mind Spirit Soul /Spirit – to be Mind – to do Body – want, have to

  31. The cognitive development process Non-dual (the way up is the way down *Develops 49- Causal (I = We and We = I). *Develops 35-49 “Development” oriented (subtle) motion, synthesize/ harmonize *Develops 21-35 “Process” oriented (vision-logic, integration, flow). *Develops 11-21 (Formal operational) Societal/automatic development stops here for about 95% of all people. “Care” driven (sensitivity). *Develops between 3-10 years of age. “Success” driven (achievement). *Develops between 3-10 years of age. 32. The six building blocks of human and community life. 15% of people develop an awareness beyond this stage. Ekistic balance. Entrepreneurship: Micro, Small, Medium, Large Enterprises Awareness / development of 75% of people ends here. Moral structure & maturity Sport and Recreation Social security. Healthy family and Community constellation (counseling) Food and health security. (nutrition, clinic, orphanage, hospice)

  33. Hocus pocus locus focus. “We” Internal locus of control. “I” External focus. External locus of control. “We” Internal focus. Internal locus of control. “I” “We” Internal locus of control. “I” “We” Internal locus of control. “I”

  34. The way up is the way down 36
