  2. INTRODUCTION : • KalpanaChawla, the first Indian-American astronaut and first Indian woman in space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997, as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator

  3. CHILDHOOD : • Born in Karnal in Haryana, India on July 1, 1961. As a child, she was fascinated by aeroplanes and flying. • Chawla completed her schoolings from the Tagore School in the city in 1976 and later took a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982

  4. EDUCATION : • Chawla moved to the United States in 1982 and obtained a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984.Chawla went on to earn a second Masters in 1986 and a PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado Boulder.

CAREER : • In 1998 KalpanaChawla started work at NASA Ames Research center in the area of powered – lift computational fluid dynamics • In 1993 KalpanaChawla joined Overset Methods Inc., Los Altos, California, as Vice President and Research Scientist to form a team with other reseachers specializing in simulation of moving multiple body problems • Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as part of the sixth astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS- 87 • In 2000 she was selected for her second flight as part of the crew of STS-107

Death : • Chawla died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster which occurred on february 1, 2003, when the Space Shuttle disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere , with the death of all seven crew members , shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission , STS- 107

  9. Memorial : • KalpanaChawla Memorial Planetarium has been setup at Kurukshetra-Pehowa road by Haryana State Council
