  5. Cultures Converge: • Saying Yes by Diana Chang • Legal Alien by Pat Mora Read both poems…the texts are difficult . You may not understand it fully the first time your read it.

  6. Cultures Converge: • Saying Yes by Diana Chang Underline the questions in the poem…what is the tone of the poem? How do you know? In the responses to the questions, what do we learn about the speaker? Look at the periods in the poem. What do periods convey to the reader? What do they reveal about the tone of the speaker?

  7. Cultures Converge: • Saying Yes by Diana Chang Tone: Chang wants Asian Americans to be proud of their heritage. TE: “I’d rather say it twice, Yes.” She realizes she has a dual heritage and is proud of both. The ellipsis (…) shows the she is thinking about the best answer to the question.

  8. Cultures Converge: • Legal Alien by Pat Mora Pat Mora represents the collective experience of Mexican American people in this poem. Underline lines that convey the idea that they are torn between two worlds. What is the theme or central idea of this poem? What are two pieces of text evidence to prove your theme?

  9. Cultures Converge: • Legal Alien by Pat Mora Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural…American but hyphenated (alludes to a compound word in which both parts are equally important) Pat Mora uses voice to convey the theme or central idea that sometimes people who are technically a part of two cultures end up feeling alienated by both. Any lines in the poem that have to do with using the Spanish and English languages and being outcasts in both. Also, the imagery leads one to think of alienation “sliding back and forth.”

  10. Cultures Converge: • Saying Yes by Diana Chang • Legal Alien by Pat Mora Based on what you said the central idea was for Legal Alien, write a paragraph on the backside of the poem and explain if Chang would agree with that theme and use text evidence to support your answer.
