  2. Hyperacidity Hyperacidity is a common condition wherein a person experiences some stomach discomfort after eating a meal, due to the excessive production of acid during the digestion process. A person may also experience a bloated feeling or some “gassiness,” which can lead to flatulence, belching or both. A bit of sourness in the mouth may also be tasted, along with an aftertaste of what had been eaten after one burp. Hyperacidity, also known as acid dyspepsia, can also cause other discomforts, such as appetite loss, vomiting, and constipation.

  3. Causes of hyperacidity A person may suffer from hyperacidity due to several causes ranging from lifestyle, eating habits, various underlying diseases, and taking certain medications. Some of the main causes of the condition include:  • Regular consumption of spicy food, which is high in fats • Irregular eating habits • Excessive fasting and starving • Alcoholism and smoking • Stress and related disorders • Peptic ulcers • GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) • Stomach cancer

  4. Symptoms Thesymptoms of hyperacidity may vary in severity. These symptoms may be most prominently seen a couple of hours after having a meal:  • Nausea and vomiting (may expel blood in extreme cases) • Sour belching and flatulence • Atonic dyspepsia (stiffness in stomach) • Indigestion and constipation • Loss of appetite • Steady pain in the abdomen • Feeling of restlessness

  5. Treatments To get an effective and permanent treatment of hyperacidity one must consider all the possibilities which can initiate the problem to identify the root cause. There are many remedies which can provide immediate relief from the problem but without treating the root cause of the problem the treatment will not be permanent in nature. Some commonly associated problems which may initiate hyperacidity are constipation, flatulence, indigestion, malfunctioning of liver and stress. Hyperacidity in a person having any of these problems subsides with the treatment of the problem itself. • Consuming buttermilk after meals is an excellent remedy for hyperacidity and if taken regularly can provide effective and permanent treatment. Eating jaggery or a piece of clove after meal also helps in treating the problem. Lemon may be acidic in nature but contains digestive enzymes and good acid, consuming sweet lemon juice before meals helps in digesting the food and nullifying the acid in the stomach.

  6. Continue: Treatments • Increased intake of fruits like banana, melon, pineapple, apple and guava are very useful in treating the problem of hyperacidity. Consumption of water shall be paid importance not only to avoid the excess secretion of acid but also for good overall health, an adult shall consume 8-10 glasses of water every day. Avoiding spicy food and fried food is a good practice to prevent hyperacidity. • Ginger is an excellent remedy for all sorts of stomach related issues it has medicinal properties as well as acts as a good digestive aid. Preparing traditional tea mixed with ginger can also work as a good remedy for hyperacidity. Consuming ginger juice with honey after meals is a sure remedy for curing excess acid secretion and good digestion. • Apart from remedies healthy habits are equally important for treating the problem effectively and permanently. Do not lie down immediately after the meals, take a mild walk after meals, most of the time people eat contradictory foods like milk after meat or lemon in the diet and milk later, such habits surely promote excessive acid during digestion to cause hyperacidity.

  7. Tips to prevent hyperacidity Being particular about the food you eat and altering your lifestyle are the only long term cures for hyperacidity. Certain self help measures for managing the disorder include:  • Eat well-cooked, less spicy food • Eat small portions of food at regular intervals • Avoid food items that are difficult to digest or cause flatulence • Avoid foods like tamarind, lemon juice, etc., as they are acidic • Reduce smoking and consumption of alcohol • Regularize your sleeping pattern • If you are suffering from stress and tension try to overcome them by practising meditation and yoga
