  1. Jesus Christ & the Church • Sacramental Basics

  2. Incarnation • Incarnare = (Latin) “to make flesh” • The Christian understanding of Jesus as “God in the flesh” underlies the belief that Jesus Christ is the fullest, most complete sacrament of God to the world. He is the sacrament out of which all others flow and by which all others are understood.

  3. Jesus’ Full Humanity • Jesus is fully God (divine) and fully human. • Jesus offers us a model of humanity at its best, an image of what we can be and what God desires for us. Jesus teaches us how to be fully human.

  4. Paschal Mystery • “Paschal” = “Passover” • God is present in our suffering. • Resurrection lets us know that God can turn any kind of suffering or tragedy into a grace-filled opportunity for new life. • John 12:24 - “…unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies , it bears much fruit.” • According to St. Paul, Jesus is the ultimate sign of God’s gracious, saving love.

  5. Pentecost • The church was charged on the day of Pentecost to be a sacrament of Jesus Christ to the world, a sign and an instrument of Christ’s - and thus God’s - continuing real presence in the world. For that reason Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Christian church.

  6. “The Church” • People of God- Chosen to be an instrument of God’s love for the world. • A community established by Christ to be as Matthew tells us “ the light of the world.” the church as a sacrament is to be a seed of unity, hope, salvation, and transformation for the whole world.

  7. “The Church” • Body of Christ - The image of the Body of Christ conveys the notion of a community whose members combine their individual gifts to work together to make him alive and present in the world. Thus, we are the hands, the feet, and heart of Christ ministering to the world today.

  8. “The Church” • Temple of the Holy Spirit - It is the Holy Spirit, poured out in God’s people at Pentecost and down through the ages, who builds up the body of Christ and gives it vitality. The spirit dwells in the church.

  9. “Reign of God” • This is the way the world would be if mankind lived life the way that God intends for us to live - as expressed in the example of the life of Jesus, in his actions and his words. Thus, we reveal to one another a God who is gracious and merciful, and by example demonstrate humanity at its best.
