  1. Role of RTO´s in the Resources Efficiency Roadmap Aahrus 19/06/2012

  2. Who are we?

  3. TECNALIA is the first applied research centre in Spain and one of the most important in Europe with around 1.500 people on staff,122€ millions turnover and more than 4.000 clients.

  4. SUSTAINABLEDEVELOPMENT INDUSTRY & TRANSPORT ICT - European Software Institute HEALTH INNOVATION STRATEGIES TECHNOLOGICAL SERVICES SUSTAINABLE BUILDING Organized in 7 Business Divisions: we work from the experience and the expertise in each of the markets in which we operate, with an efficient and proactive attitude.

  5. Smokes and Smokes and particles particles recovery recovery Development of Development of Overall energy Overall energy new refractory new refractory optimisation optimisation materials materials Combination of Combination of Furnace Furnace HIGH ENERGY HIGH ENERGY different heating different heating simulation simulation EFFICIENT EFFICIENT systems systems design design FURNACE FURNACE Glass Glass Cement Cement Ceramics Ceramics Industry end users Energy Intensive Industries (EII) Non ferrous metals The overall objective of the EDEFU project is to develop New Ecological Furnaces Designs addressing the needs of the Energy Intensive Industries such as non ferrous metals, glass, ceramics and cement. These designs will be developed with the double aim to increase the (i) furnace’s energy efficiency and (ii) cost efficiency.

  6. EDEFU OBJECTIVES • Develop integrated hybrid heating systems • 20% energy efficiency increase • Set up new insulation designs • Develop new energy and waste recovery systems • Set up complete simulation models • Validate developed concepts on industrial level • Reduction of emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse Gases (GHG) higher than 20% • Feedstock savings higher than 20% • Operating cost reduction of at least 10% • Productivity increase of at least 10%

  7. AERTO´s Value From WASTE • The grand challenge within waste treatment is to create value from waste in a sustainable manner. To do so, one has to extract valuable materials from waste streams with sufficient purity for recycling ensuring the absence of contamination from other harmful materials. Within the AERTOs cooperation the research is focused on: • - Inventory, systems analysis and dynamics of scarce metals • - Extraction methods for minor fractions containing scarce metals • - Fate of material containing scarce metals after incineration • Nanoparticles in waste treatment processes • The project is joining efforts from the partnering RTOS Fraunhofer, SINTEF, SP, TNO, TECNALIA and VTT

  8. SPIRE Resources and Energy Efficiency in the Process Industry What is SPIRE? These process industries represent a major part of the manufacturing base in Europe (EU27), together including more than 450 thousand enterprises. They have over 6.8 million employees, generating more than €1,600 billion turnover. As such, REP represents 20% of the total European manufacturing industry, both in terms of employment and turn over. What is SPIRE? A proposal for a European Private Public Partnership (PPP) dedicated to innovation in resource and energy efficiency in and enabled by the process industries Its objective To develop the enabling technologies and solutions along the value chain, required to reach long term sustainability for Europe in terms of global competitiveness, ecology and employment.

  9. SPIRE Resources and Energy Efficiency in the Process Industry ROADMAP • Involve the right stakeholders (sectors and RTOs) • Leverage on previous work (sectoral, national, EC, UN visions docs, research agenda’s etc.) • Overall SPIRE vision and targets as guideline • A common workplan, working methdology, tools and key milestones • EC support and guidance • A «dynamic» iterative process

  10. Roadmap for securing a sustainable raw materials supply basis for Europe The Forest Fibre Industry, 2050 roadmap to a low carbon bioeconomy European Technology Platform on Sustainable Minerals - Strategic Research Agenda Cement Technology Road map European Waste Directive Chemistry Innovations for GHG Reductions (Mc Kinsey) Guidance by EC Ad Hoc Industry Advisory Group Sector «mirror-groups» SPIRE Resources and Energy Efficiency in the Process Industry ROADMAP 5: Draft to EC for public Consultation
