  1. Beowulf—The Epic Tradition

  2. The Epic—pg. 17 • A long narrative poem about a quest, told in formal, elevated language. • Large-than-life hero who embodies the particular values of a culture. • Incredible plot involving large-scale events. • Mix of myth, legend, and history that often includes gods and goddesses as characters • “the Epic Hero” pg. 17

  3. Epic Hero and archetypes • Archetype: a very old imaginative pattern that appears in literature of different cultures and time periods. Archetypes can be a character, a plot, an image, or a setting. • Epic Hero (character archetype): personify the values of the culture that creates them. • Reading strategy: paraphrasing—tell me what it is…

  4. Extended Journal • Beowulf Extended Journal: (1-2 pages double spaced): Due Tuesday • I want you to combine the two journal entries for this week. Talk about what a hero is and what it takes to be a good leader. What characteristics do leaders and “heroes” possess? What heroic qualities do we already see in Beowulf through the first 6 parts of this epic?
