  2. Political Changes • Franco ruled until 1975 • Paul Preston, “[Franco ruled] as if it were a country occupied by a victorious foreign army.” • Aimed at saving the country from Communism

  3. Political Costs • 1939: The Law of Political Responsibility made Republican supporters liable for their actions. • Wages were cut • CNT and UGT were abolished • Industrial political activism was outlawed • Restored power to the privileged class and to control the working class

  4. Human Cost • 100,000 Republicans killed during the war • 70,000 Nationalists killed • 40,000-200,000 were killed in subsequent years as part of the White Terror • Concentration camps and prisons • Orphanages

Economic Costs • Economy devastated • Per capita income was 28% lower in 1939 than 1935 • Communications system was out of date • Unemployment was rampant • Landowners weren’t interested in modernization • Economy only temporarily grew during the neutrality of WWII • Famine in 1946 • Economy finally recovered in 1950s and 1960s due to a powerful capitalist economy and industrialization reforms.
