  1. How to handle using other employee’s tools and space. Responsibility and Liability

  2. If you need to use a co-worker’s tools or space….. • Always ask permission to use a co-worker’s tools and/or space. • Speak directly to that person, and that person only. • Give the reason(s) why you want to borrow these things.

  3. Be Respectful…. • Treat co-workers tools and/or space better than you treat your own. • Use the tools ONLY for what they were designed for. (ie., do not use a screwdriver as a chisel).

  4. Accept Responsibility…. • If you damage a co-worker’s tools and/or space. • If you lose a co-worker’s tool(s). • If you must pass the tools and/or space on to someone else, obtain prior permission from the person you borrowed these things from.

  5. You may be liable…. • If tools and/or space is damaged as a result of misuse and abuse. • If tools are lost while in your possession or someone else’s possession. • If tools have been left out and stolen.

  6. Admit your mistakes…. • Do not lie to your co-worker. Tell them exactly what happened if you damaged or lost their tools. • If a tool and/or space. was damaged as a result of misuse, offer to replace or repair it. • Stress that you are very sorry and that you will never let it happen again.

  7. You may not be liable…. • If a tool or piece of equipment fails as a result of normal wear. • If tools and/or space are damaged as a result of fire, flood, etc..

  8. Appreciation…. • Be sure to follow co-workers special instructions when using tools and/or space. • Have respect for your co-workers.

  9. Returning tools…. • Tools should be returned clean. • Tools should be returned when finished with them. • Tools should ONLY be returned to the respectful owner.

  10. Returning spaces…. • Spaces should be clean and organized after using them. • Everything should be as it was before you used the space. • Equipment should be turned off after use.

  11. Thanking your co-worker…. • Thank them for the use of tools and/or space. • Inform co-worker that tools and/or space have been returned. • Tell co-worker that you really appreciate their help.

  12. Return the favor…. • Do not forget that a little kindness goes a long way. • Help your co-workers out. • Show them you are a team player. • Remember that you were in their shoes at one time.

  13. Do’s and don’ts…. • Do ask permission to borrow tools and/or space prior to using them. • Do give reasons why you need to borrow the tools and/or space. • Do thank co-worker after he/she lends you the tools and/or space.

  14. Do’s and don’ts…. • Do treat tools and/or space better than you would your own. • Do clean tools and/or space after using them. • Do ask permission to pass tools and/or space to another co-worker

  15. Do’s and don’ts…. • Don’t take tools and/or space without prior permission. • Don’t leave tools in the dirt or water. • Don’t leave tools unattended.
