  2. Student Living • Student Living accommodates just over 2,500 students in halls of residence. • Student Living places approximately 1900 students with private landlords every year. • Accommodation is a key issue for students and a big expense.

  3. Halls of residence • 7 halls of residence in Derby and one in Buxton. • The basic room options are standard rooms or en suite rooms. • Rooms are arranged in flats of 4 – 8 and every flat has a shared kitchen. • Residents choose if they want to live in single or mixed gender flats.

  4. Services • Student Welfare is very important to us. • Halls are manned 24 hours a day and there is also a dedicated Policy and Welfare Manager • Car parking and bike storage are available at all halls for an additional charge. • There are coin operated laundries on all sites and all halls in Derby are on or near a Unibus route.

  5. Costs • In comparison with our benchmark group of Universities we provide reasonably priced halls of residence and a range of options. • Fees include utility bills, secure entry system and CCTV as well as a weekly clean of all communal areas. • We charge a one off booking fee which covers their internet, contents insurance and internal telephone use for the year.

  6. Private accommodation • Student Living runs an Approved Accommodation Scheme which allows us to advertise properties to students after comprehensive assessment. • By choosing a University Approved property you can be sure that the property and the landlord have been fully assessed and meet the minimum standards required by the University. • We may also be able to help in disputes, and should you need to leave your room for any reason during the term of the contract, we can help you find another tenant to take over your contract (with the landlord’s agreement).

  7. Discussion • What are the positive experiences about living in halls?

  8. Discussion • What would improve the student experience of living in halls?

  9. Discussion • What are the perceptions of private sector housing for students in Derby?

  10. Discussion • Are you aware of the University Accreditation scheme for private Housing and what the benefits are for students?
