    9. Crime on Campus Unattended property theft is BY FAR the most frequently reported crime on campus Assume other people want your stuff In the vast majority of all theft cases, the crimes are PREVENTABLE Let participants know: Statistically, if a person is going to be the victim of a crime at UMCP, it will be theft Community members can protect their belongings by following simple steps: Secure property (lock it up, hide it, leave it with a trusted person) Engrave property (contact Capt. Brandt to borrow engraver) Purchase laptop cables or lockdown devices; LoJack for computers Purchase U-Locks for bicycles; also register bicycles with DOTS While crimes against persons do periodically occur, they are a small portion of reports To reduce the likelihood of being the victim of a crime against persons: Use the many services/safety features available (Shuttle, Escort, Safe Corridors, etc.) If going to use alcohol, use it in moderation/responsibly Know environment (PERTs, lighted areas, CCTV cams, UMDPS phone, etc.) Plan where you will go & what you will do if confronted (run, fight back, scream, etc.) When crime occurs, we address it aggressively; detectives have an excellent case closure rate When sex crimes occur, they are almost always acquaintance situations and also almost always involve alcohol IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR VICTIMS & WITNESSES TO REPORT CRIMES AND OTHER SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES TO US WHEN THEY OCCUR!Let participants know: Statistically, if a person is going to be the victim of a crime at UMCP, it will be theft Community members can protect their belongings by following simple steps: Secure property (lock it up, hide it, leave it with a trusted person) Engrave property (contact Capt. 10. Laptops Do not leave your laptop unattended Anywhere Make note of your laptop’s brand, model and serial number Use a USB cable lock to secure your laptop Consider various laptop tracking software subscriptions (e.g. Lojack for Laptops)

    11. Bicycles The first thing you can do to protect your bike against theft is to buy a quality lock.  We strongly recommend a quality U-lock. Majority of stolen bikes on campus either don’t use a U-lock or are improperly locked. We recommend first, locking your frame and your front tire to the bike rack using the U-lock.  Then, use the secondary cable to connect your back tire to the frame and if possible to the rack itself. Registering your bike is also strongly recommended. Bike registration aids authorities in locating the owner of a stolen bike. Bicycle registration Instructions can be found on the Department of Transportation Services website: http://www.transportation.umd.edu

    12. Residence Halls Security Main Entrances Swipe Card Access – resident’s UM ID cards are activated Commonly defeated by propped doors and tailgating Elevators Swipe Card Access Individual Rooms – key access – this is the front door to your home All of your belongings and information become vulnerable when your room is left unsecured or propped open

    13. Personal Safety Plan Program (301) 405-3333, the UMDPS Emergency Number into your personal mobile phone. Trust your instincts. They are a natural gift that tells you when something is wrong. Be ready to take protective action if necessary. This could be something as simple as crossing the street and entering a populated area.

    14. Safety Precautions Be aware that you are a potential victim of crime Stay alert and attuned to people and circumstances around you - electronic devices that block your hearing or split your attention make it difficult for you to remain vigilant. Note the locations of the Blue Light Emergency Phones and look for them as you walk. Report suspicious activity/people to the police immediately. Be aware of suspicious vehicles - Vehicles with their headlights off or that slow down near you may pose a potential threat. Move away from the vehicles, quickly move to a populated area and provide an accurate description of the vehicle to police. Avoid isolation. After dark, walk with others and use well-lit paths. Department of Public Safety escort services are available 24/7.

    15. Safety Precautions (cont.) Do not carry your name, address or car license number on your key ring. Never leave wallets, purses, checkbooks, laptops and other personal property of value lying visibly in a room or vehicle or unattended in public places. Always lock your door even if you leave for “just a minute.” Always lock your door when you go to sleep. Do not leave notes on your door announcing you are not at home. Close curtains at night. Do not take in overnight guests you don’t know. Do not prop open any building doors. Do not open doors to strangers. Do not allow unescorted visitors into residence halls or apartment buildings. Lock windows and security screens Work out an agreement with your neighbors, roommates and housemates to practice good safety and security habits.
