  1. Introduction: purpose of the meeting and EU-funding status Gerard van der Steenhoven (Aspera/FOM)

  2. Phase I    • Phase II: − timelines & • priorities for each WG • Phase III: • overall priorities (2008 – 2009) The ASPERA road map process ASPERA is a European network of national funding agencies responsible for coordinating national APP research efforts.

  3. TODAY Today: concluding Phase II • Reports 7 working groups: • science case • most important projects • required budget profile • Questionnaires to agencies: • funding mechanisms • present APP funding (k€) • present manpower (FTE) • Questionnaires to projects: • status, funding • timelines, costs • risks

  4. Preliminary Questionnaires to agencies - I • APP personnel in 2006 FTE employed / year Total #FTE’s in ’06: ~3000

  5. Preliminary Questionnaires to agencies - II • Caveats: • not all forms submitted • analysis just started • Funding in 2006 (k€): • materials: ~70 M€ (i.e. 700 M€ in 10 yrs) • personnel: ~ 150 M€ • Goals: • set boundary conditions • identify possible obstacles

  6. Example WG3: high-energy cosmic rays • New resources ’08 – ‘18 • = 94.6 M€ • = 1318 FTE

  7. ASPERA projects Example WG3: high-energy cosmic rays • Required investments Auger-North Super-Euso

  8. Example WG3: high-energy cosmic rays • Required manpower

  9. Some more examples… • WG3: • WG6: • WG7: Auger-North Einstein GW Telescope Auger-North Super-Euso Megaton project: (Memphys or Glacier or Lena)

  10. Preliminary The APP ambitions • Key projects:

  11. Conclusions • Astroparticle physics in EU: • High ambition level • Present investment level 700 M€ in 10 years • Required resources: 1,400 M€ in ’08 – ’18 • Timing differences: • next 5 years: Auger-North, CTA, KM3NeT,.. • after 2013: Einstein Telescope. Megaton
