  1. The One Hectare Telescope Douglas Bock Radio Astronomy Laboratory, UC Berkeley

  2. The One Hectare Telescope (1hT) • Scope/Specifications • Basic system design • Hardware prototyping  Prototype Test Array • Software/signal processing development  Rapid Prototype Array • Schedule

  3. The One Hectare Telescope (1hT) • Joint project of SETI Institute and UC Berkeley RAL • ~500 elements, each 5 m in diameter • 1 ha effective area (170 m2/K) • 0.5-11 GHz instantaneously • Multiple simultaneous beams • Field of view 4 degrees at 1 GHz • Inbuilt RFI mitigation • Located at Hat Creek, California

  4. Hardware Development • Novel feed design • Mount/antenna development • Wideband, high-performance InP LNAs • Cheap and reliable 80 K cryogenics

  5. The Rapid Prototype Array Back-end prototype for the 1hT Develop: • Methods to deal with RFI • Beam-forming algorithms • Calibration techniques with GPS • Control software and hardware

  6. RPA specifications • Seven 3.6-m dishes • Irregular hexagonal configuration • Dual polarization receivers • Band includes GPS, Iridium, HI • 10 MHz instantaneous bandwidth digitized at 8 bits • Remote operation

  7. RPA Flexibility • 8-12 bit sampling • 25-50 MS/s • RAIDs for more data • A new site for less (more?) RFI

  8. 1hT Project Schedule Rapid Prototype Array operational 2000 Preliminary design review 2001 Critical design review 2002 Prototype Test Array operational Decision to proceed to construction phase 2003 First light, partial telescope 2004 2005 Routine observations begin
