  2. Foot Binding was practiced originally by the wealthy but by the 17th century was practiced by all classes. It was done because small feet were considered beautiful and made a woman “delicate”. When the communists rose to power Foot Binding was outlawed but was still practiced. However painful the process of foot binding was it did not yield any immediate consequences and women were fully able to move about. Ideally a woman’s foot after foot binding was 3inches long, 2 inches wide and had a 2 inch crease through the center. The shoes that women with bound feet wore were known as "Lotus Shoes” and “Splendid Slippers”. Foot binding in the Song dynasty

Technology in the Song Dynasty • During the time of the Song Dynasty, the introduction of the windmill and moveable type resulted. • Advances in civil engineering, nautics, and metallurgy evolved during the time as well • Advancements in weaponry resulted in the use of gunpowder and the cannon.

  5. The men of the upper class in China at the time studied for these civil service examinations from the time they were born until they were around twenty to twenty five years old. The exam lasted for three days and the men were not allowed to leave or take a break from the small concrete booth. Some men went crazy while taking the exam, and only the elite few were accepted. They were tested on the five studies which were military strategy, civil law, revenue and taxation, agriculture and geography, and The Confucian Classics. The Civil Service Examination was a strategy for selecting the best government officials.
