This event provides information on core and option subjects, pathway choices, and the English Baccalaureate. Students will learn about choosing courses based on their interests, skills, learning style, and career aspirations.

  10. Option choices • The English Baccalaureate*(English, mathematics, double science, or two from biology, chemistry, physics, computing, geography or history and a foreign language) • All students to access the Ebacc

  11. Progress 8 • Measure introduced by the government • Progress across 8 qualifications including: English language, English literature, mathematics, science, computer science, humanities, MFL and up to three vocational subjects • Progress in all subjects- not just grades

  12. Choosing courses Your daughter must consider: • Which subjects she enjoys and why • Which subjects is she good at • Her preferred learning style • Her career aspirations • Keeping her options open • Progression at Post 16 and Post 18

  13. Choosing courses Your daughter must not choose her options: • Based on what her friends have chosen • Because she likes the teacher • Because it is what ‘XX’ wants me to do

Pathway 1 Traditional route – predominantly GCSE qualifications with a choice of four subjects studied over 2 years Pathway 2 Traditional/vocational route – mixture of GCSE and BTEC qualifications with a choice of four subjects with some delivered in one year and some over two years Pathway 3 Skill development route - a range of level 1 and 2 courses which focus on developing key skills in English, Mathematics and ICT and preparation for the world of work. Extra support for GCSE English and Mathematics also provided Pathway 4 &5 GCSE and Internship route – choice of two GCSEs alongside a vocational level 2 BTEC course plus opportunity to work with employers in a chosen vocational area Pathways Pathway 1 Traditional/vocational route – mixture of GCSE and vocational qualifications with a choice of four subjects studied over 2 years including a MFL and geography and/or history Pathway 2 A mixture of GCSE and vocational qualifications with a choice of three subjects studied over 2 years including geography and/or history. There will be additional support for English and maths.

  17. Art & photography Art and Photography are separate GCSEs and both can be chosen if a student is particularly interested in a creative pathway or future career. The first 2 terms of lessons are all workshops so they will be taught the skills they need during this time and then able to make their own decisions as to which techniques they want to use/specialise in. Students will enjoy art and/or photography if they are imaginative, like doing practical work, enjoy trying new things and want to be able to express themselves in a creative manner. Art and Photography both offer a range of transferable skills; analytical skills, creative thinking, technical skills, problem solving, forming ideas and realising initial concepts. Students also develop their understanding of visual language. • AQA Art and Design UNIT 1 – PORTFOLIO •This unit is worth 60% of the GCSE grade. •Completed in year 10 and first term of year 11. Made up of two projects. UNIT 2 – EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT •This unit is worth 40% of the GCSE grade. •Completed between the 1st January of year 11 and the last week of April. • Miss Tooley

Creative Media Production Mrs Venn l.venn@lordswoodtrust.co.uk BTEC Tech Awards Creative Media Production • An ideal course if you are in interested in developing creative media and IT skills. • You will develop skills through a variety of practical assignments to create multimedia products. Units could include: • Pre-production skills • Creating Digital Graphics • Creating a multipage website • Creating a Digital magazine

Drama Miss Briggsf.briggs@lordswoodtrust.co.ukMrs Swallow s.swallow@lordswoodtrust.co.uk Component 1: Devising Theatre Non-exam assessment: internally assessed, externally moderated (40% of qualification) You will participate in the creation, development and performance of a piece of devised theatre using techniques set by WJEC. You must produce: > a realisation of a piece of devised theatre > a portfolio of supporting evidence > an evaluation of the final performance. Component 2: Performing from a Text Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by a visiting examiner ( 20% of qualification) You will study two extracts from the same performance text and participate in one performance using sections of text from both extracts. Component 3: Interpreting Theatre Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes (40% of qualification) Section A: Set Text Hard to Swallow, Mark Wheeller Section B: Live Theatre Review

  23. Geography Miss Gager r.gager@lordswoodtrust.co.uk Geography is classed as a ‘facilitating’ subject by Universities. Geography is seen as the ‘bridge’ between humanities and sciences. GCSE Geography is a popular choice at LGS and results are above the national average.

  24. Hospitality & Catering Mrs Faulkner p.faulkner@lordswoodtrust.co.uk The hospitality and catering sector is one of the largest workforce sectors in the UK. Studying hospitality and catering gives students the opportunity to study this key area and develop further their food and cookery skills. Unit 1 - The hospitality and catering industry (examination) (40%) Unit 2 - Hospitality and catering in action (controlled assessment) (60%) Students will apply their learning to safely prepare, cook and present nutritional dishes. They will consider:- • Which establishments provide a hospitality and catering service • Job opportunities available • Laws within the industry • Importance of nutritional needs to a range of consumers • The best ways to store, cook and present food This course is suitable for students who enjoy food and cooking and who may have an interest in a career within the sector.

  25. Health & Social Care d.muggleton@lordswoodtrust.co.uk Approx 3 million people work in health and social care. Social care roles include care assistants, social workers, occupational therapists, counsellors. Health care roles include nurses, pharmacists, midwives. HSC is also useful for childcare careers. The BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care course develops sector-specific knowledge and practical skills. There are strong opportunities for post-16 progression, we are launching the new T Level in 2020. HSC is a popularcourse. • Mrs Muggleton

PE • Mr Guppy a.guppy@lordswoodtrust.co.uk Theoretical Component (60% overall) • End of course examinations • Range of topics including methods of training, anatomy & physiology, psychology of sport. • Students supported Practical Component (40% overall) • Students pick 3 sports to be assessed on • One individual, one team and one personal choice • 10% is made up by their PDP Why Choose Physical Education? Adds a variety to option choices; Positive impact on academic performance in other subjects; Not all about the performance! Links very well with Biology/Science, Psychology, Business, Food/Nutrition
