  2. What are microbes? • Microbes are the oldest form of life on Earth. • They are visible only with a microscope.

  3. What are microbes? • Microbes live in the water you drink, the food you eat, and the air you breathe. • Right now, billions of microbes are swimming in your belly and mouth, and crawling on your skin!

  4. What are microbes? • Some microbes are harmful to humans. • But, don't worry, over 95% of microbes are good for you

  6. How can we prevent bad microbes from making us ill? • Wash your hands regularly • Avoid touching raw meat and if you are cooking, wash your hands after touching it. • Do not eat food if it smells funny or if it has fallen to the floor. • Avoid touching too many surfaces in unknown places

  7. Can you think of other ways to protect ourselves from illness?

  8. Microbes can be helpful • Microbes help us get rid of our garbage and waste by eating it. This process is called decomposition.

  9. Can you think of examples where microbes help us by getting rid of waste products?

  10. Microbes help make some of our favorite foods, like cheese and yogurt. This process is called fermentation.

  11. Can you think of any other food items that might be created by microbes?

  12. Some microbes live in our body and help us fight off bad microbes that would make us sick.
