Theodore bilbo • Bilbo was involved in many scandals and accounts of voting fraud. • Even with all the scandals, the people of Mississippi voted on him for senator and lieutenant governor. • Bilbo became governor of Mississippi in 1916. • He was a lot like Vardaman. He had some racist views, and he supported poor, white farmers.

  4. Henry whitfield • Whitfield ran for governor against Bilbo in 1924. • Whitfield expected to have the edge because women were voting for the first time. He won the election. • He said that education was the state’s salvation

  5. Whitfield and business • Whitfield reversed many policies that had restricted big business.

  6. Whitfield and africanamericans • Very strict on lynching laws • Spoke to black organizations • Visited and funded black schools • Welcomed them into his office • Listened to their problems

  7. Whitfield and bilbo • Whitfield passed away in 1927, and Bilbo returns as governor. • Bilbo is not as successful this time because the legislature ignored him, and the Great Depression hit in 1929.

  10. Effects of the great migration • Labor shortage in Mississippi • African Americans were forced to stay • In Hattiesburg and Jackson, police arrested anyone trying to buy a train ticket. • Black economic status declined

  14. The New deal • CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps): Hired the unemployed to work on environmental projects such as planting trees and conserving the soil.
