What are microbes? • Single celled organisms that make up the bacteria and archaea kingdoms; the first organisms to form. • They make up a majority of the life on Earth in terms of mass are microbes. • A microscopic living organism, such as a bacterium, fungus, protozoan or virus. • With few exceptions, microbes’ primary role is that of decomposers, consuming organic muck and dead material and allowing it to be used within the system.

  3. Role in Ecology • Nearly all microbes are either decomposers or producers. • They play the major role of maintaining the nitrogen and carbon cycles.

  4. tiny Evolution • Microbes are the oldest organism on earth specifically 3.3 billion years. • Without them evolution would have been kaput!

  5. Deep Sea • Life for the microbes in the deep ocean is intense. • Several factors in their environment are immense pressure, complete darkness, and restricted by lack of chemicals and nutrients in most places.

  6. The ocean is separated into multiple biospheres or layers • Each of these sphere has it’s own characteristics. • Only areas that have lots of light have been heavily observed.

  8. JOIDES Resolution • Why name our research vessel JOIDES Resolution? “JOIDES” stands for Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling. The name reflects the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program's (IODP) commitment to the science of exploring what lies beneath the ocean floor... “Resolution” honors an earlier ship, the HMS Resolution, commanded more than 200 years ago by Capt. James Cook, who explored the Pacific and Antarctic regions • mission to advance research, education and sound ocean policy.

  9. What are the Important ones? • Halomonas titanicae — Was found on the titanic’s rusticles and the delicate icicle like structure’s that form on rusting iron. The microbe is a member of the "salt-loving" Halomonas genus.(Picture 1) • Methanopyrus kandleri — One of the better known microbes because it is capable of living in near boiling water.  Methanopyrus eats hydrogen and carbon dioxide and makes methane.( Picture 2) • Alcanivorax borkumensis — is a helpful microbe that can eat oil and hydrocarbons in the presence of oxygen. It is currently looking for a new home… somewhere oily. (Picture 3)

  10. FLOCS • What does FLOCSstand for? Flow-through Osmo Colonization Systems What are FLOCS? They are cassettes and chambers that are usually packed with several colonization substrates (for example glass beads). FLOCS are usually sent down to the bottom of the ocean with a miniature environment that can be colonized by microbes.
