  3. South Sudan Is Born • January 2011: 99% of the South Sudanese vote for independence • July 2011: South Sudan officially recognized as independent nation • Capital = Juba • President = Salva Kiir Mayardit • Government = Republic run by SPLA • Population = 8 million • States = 10

Dispute with Sudan over oil revenue + One of the least developed nations in Africa + Poverty + Abyei region’s special administrative status + Corrupt government? + Attempted coup d'état? + Inter-ethnic clashes + Ignoring needs tribal groups in rural areas + 7 different armed groups = CIVIL WAR
