  4. Ilya Frank • Frank attended Moscow State University when he was eighteen. • He studied physics and mathematics. • After he graduated,(1930) he worked at the Institute of Physics.

  5. Ilya Frank • He was in charge of the Atomic Nucleus Laboratory. (Academy of Sciences) • He was a professor at Moscow State University from 1944 until he died.

  6. Nobel Prize • Frank won a jointly awarded Nobel Prize for Physics in 1958. • The award was received for explaining the phenomenon of Cherenkov radiation. • The winners along with Frank were: • Pavel Cherenkov • Igor Tamm

Cherenkov Theory -1934 Pavel Cherenkov discovered: • light is emitted by charged particles traveling at very high speeds through water • Resulted in the discovery of new methods: • Detecting and measuring the velocity of high-speed nuclear particles. • Became of great importance for research in nuclear physics.

  10. Interesting Facts • He was involved in the making of the Soviet uranium-graphite reactor. • Frank also worked with Cherenkov and Tamm with research on electron radiation.
