  5. A CLAUSE (sentence part w/ subject and verb) can be or INDEPENDENT (stands alone) DEPENDENT (cannot stand alone) “She began the new book…” “When she began the new book…”

  6. 4 types of sentences Simple 1 independent clause The students chose a book. The students chose a book, and the teacher read it. Compound 2 or more independent clauses While the teacher read, the students chose a book. COMPLEX 1 independent + at least 1 dependent Compound-Complex 2 or more independent clauses+ 1 dependent While the teacher read, the students chose a book and the principal walked in.
