  7. Carry Phase Javelin is held in throwing arm at ninety degrees by isometric medial deltoid contraction. Athlete runs in this position until they approach throwing position. Hand muscles are contracted isometrically by flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicislongus to hold javelin.

  8. Carry Phase Cont. Athlete continues running until they are approaching throwing position. They begin to cross their legs over through a series of abductions, by gluteus medius, and adductions, by adductor brevis, longus, and magnus.

  9. Prepatory Phase Posterior deltoid locks shoulder in horizontal abduction. Rhomboids protract shoulder girdle.

  10. Movement Pt. 1 Leg of throwing side external rotation at hip due to gluteus maximus contraction to plant foot sideways. Leg opposite to throwing arm extends, hip flexion by rectus femoris and illiopsoas muscles.

  11. Movement Pt. 2 Foot opposite of throwing arm lands in dorsiflexion by tibialis anterior. Throwing arm moves from horizontal abduction to externally rotated by infraspinatus and teres minor. Hips laterally rotate away from throwing arm by oblique muscles opposite to throwing arm. Leg of throwing arm lands in dorsiflexion and internally rotates, by semitendenosis and semimembranosis, and moves from slightly bend to full extension at knee by quadriceps, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris. The foot of the throwing side plantar flexes by gastrocnemius to push off.

  12. Movement Pt. 3 Throwing arm internally rotates at shoulder girdle by contraction of latissimus dorsi while shoulder diagonally adducts by contraction of pectoralis major for almost overhand throwing motion. Hand muscles relax to release javelin.

  13. Recovery Phase Quadriceps of the leg opposite throwing arm contract eccentrically to stop forward movement. Posterior deltoid contracts to stop diagonal adduction of shoulder. The leg of the throwing arm extends by quadriceps.
