  3. Where were we? Department of Survey and Land Information 1879 1987 Department of Lands and Survey Department of Lands X Cadastral Record Sheets and Indexes DCDB DCDB SDI SDI Digitised Department of Conservation Landcorp

  4. Where were we? 1879 1987 1996 Department of Survey and Land Information Land Information New Zealand Department of Lands and Survey X Cadastral Record Sheets and Indexes cadastral Record Sheets DCDB SDI Digitised Titles System Titles Lands and deeds CRS – “Landonline

  5. Where were we? 1987 1996 Department of Survey and Land Information Land Information New Zealand DCDB Titles CRS – “Landonline Bulk Data (BDE) BDE - Cost of dissemination now $54 BDE - Cost recoverywas +$100,000.00 - Multiple formats - One size fits all, txt format

  6. So where are we now? • Protects and manages data Landonline • Maintained and enhanced systems and processes • Assists in providing certainty of property rights

  7. So where are we now? Is the Cadastre !!! (except some historical records) Surveyors Conveyencers Landonline Territorial Authorities LINZ Staff

  8. So where are we now? • Saves having to recapture data for mapping or display purposes • Always reflects the latest informaton • Linked to title information • Facilitates quality assurance, searching etc Landonline

  9. Well are we there yet? • Fulfills the regulatory requirements • Provides significant efficiencies • Enables the provision of Cadastral data to 3rd parties (via a Bulk data extract) Sort of! Landonline

  10. Well are we there yet? Identified increased demand and pressure Due to: • The success of Landonline • The low data costs • The number of indirect users • Increased spatial awareness • A desire for different formats, structures and delivery methods • The historical nature of the data • A general requirement for higher standards

  11. Where to now? LINZ undertook a customer survey

  12. Where to now? Geospatialstrategy Principles - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  13. Where to now? Geospatial strategy Principle: • Fundamental to Landonline design - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  14. Where to now? Geospatial strategy Principle: • We’ve surveyed our users • Looking at new delivery mechanisms – an SDI? • Do we need a public search function? • Full Data set is complex – what to do? • Improve documentation? Add Metadata? - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  15. Where to now? Geospatial strategy Principle: • Survey / Title linking project (2yrs) • Spatial data Accuracy (2yrs) • Data Improvement Strategy • Improve Documentation? • Existing BDE format not easy to use - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  16. Where to now? Geospatial strategy Principle: • Licence agreements to protect sensitive data • Creative Commons agreement for Non Sensitive data? (eg parcels) • SDI in the future? Provide GIS formats? • Cost of data is negligible in current format - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  17. Where to now? Geospatial strategy Principle: • Only Authenticated users on Landonline • High security and change control • Disaster recovery • Core Paper Records (Public Archive) Project - Collected once - Discovery and access is easy - Easy to understand, integrate, interpret and use - Available, and not unduly restricted - Appropriately preserved and protected

  18. Summary Where were we? - The same place as everyone else Where are we now? - Well placed for the future Are we there yet? - Almost, but the goal posts keep moving Where to now? - Continue to fulfill core business - Improved data - Improved data access - Increased inter-relationships with others
