This is what I should see within your presentation? • What is texting and driving? • Who is texting while driving? • Why is it an issue? • Who is affected? • What can be done to stop texting and driving…….

  3. Texting= to send a text message from one cell phone to another. • Drive= to operate the mechanism and controls and direct the course of a vehicle. http://www.merriam-webster.com Texting while Driving is when a driver decides to send a text message while operating a vehicle.

Where is the analysis of it?

  5. Why is it an issue? Where is the analysis of these accidents? Cont…. • In 2009, more than 135 billion text messages were sent or received in a one-month period in the U.S., an 80 percent increase over the rate in 2008.http://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/rulemaking/pdf/Texting_Law_021910.pdf Analysis of the legislation would be good to do.

Cell phone dangers: • Handling cell phone for dialing, answering and texting, picture taking etc • By doing this both hands are not on the wheel, eyes are not on the road and this can cause distractions which can cause crashes and injuries • The conversation that the driver is having • Escalation in emotions (i.e. anger, sad, excited etc) can affect the driving of an individual to make things less safe for everyone on the road • www.cellphonesafety.org What is this organization? Advocate or expert on the issue?

  9. The analysis needs to be edited. Many errors in writing conventions. Cartoon Analysis In the cartoon to the right. The author portrays irony as the way to convey this message. In the cartoon the women in the passenger asks the driver if her saw a video were two teens got killed while texting and driving. And the driver goes on his phone to look which is ironic because they could be in that same situation when there texting and driving. Use this rubric to guide you in your analysis. In the cartoon to the left there is a man texting and driving and on the other side of the cartoon there id death laughing . He is laughing because when you text and drive you are almost staring death in the face. What the author wanted us to get from this was that if you text and drive you are playing with death.

  11. Ad Campaign Analysis This is an ad campaign from ATT&T. In the fine print it says “This was the text message eighteen year old Mariah West was reading as she drove into oncoming traffic. No text is worth dying over.” in this ad the author is being persuasive and adding sympathy to not text and drive. The author makes a legit statement that not test is worth dying over. This ATT&T ad is a new campaign that came out a couple months ago for people to be aware about the danger s of texting and driving and they make it very clear with this ad campaign.

Counter Argument • A new study reveals that the human brain is capable of processing two tasks at a time. • When faced with two tasks, a part of the brain known as the Medial Prefrontal Cortex divides the tasks into two parts so that one half the brain focuses on a task and the other half focuses on another. In this study it is safe to say that it is capable for a person to do two tasks at one time, so texting and driving is capable for the human brain to do( but it also depends on the individual.) • People might say that the text is important and time sensitive, however, in our opinion if it is THAT important pull over and continue to drive when done. • Http://www.southwestern.edu/studentlife/orgs/megaphone/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/texting.jpg • http://www.taranfx.com/human-brain-multitasking

  13. What is being done….. • Laws have been in place to stop texting and driving. If a driver is caught texting and driving there is usually high consequences such as fees and other harsh realities. • This photo from saferautomobiles.com represents all the states who ban texting, partially ban texting and do not ban texting. • In the state of Arizona there is no ban on texting but one may surface in the near future.

What can be done to stop texting and driving….. • Using hand free equipment-FDIHandsFree system is a voice activated system that allows you to talk and text and allowing you to have both hands on the wheel. http://texting-while-driving.org • DON’T DO IT! The researchers at Virginia Tech found that drivers involved in a crash while using their phones had typically been staring at their phone for only 5 seconds. This was a study done by taping real world drivers in an 18th month period. http://texting-while-driving.org If drivers were not texting and driving they would not be at risk a crash. • Awareness- many drivers do not know the consequences of texting while driving, we recommend going to http://texting-while-driving.org, to do research of your own and see why texting and driving should not be done. Also we hope that this PowerPoint that we have done has bought awareness to this issue. If people knew the consequences and risks of texting and driving it can make a trend to be stopped.

  15. Conclusion….. • In conclusion, texting and driving is dangerous. It is not limited to just teenagers, but even adults are doing it! We have shown you not only pictures but articles that support why texting and driving is dangerous. • Simply, DO NOT DO IT!!
