Woodward 5 Sustainability Plan Responsibilities • STEERING COMMITTEE: • WHO: City Representatives, County Staff and Consultants • WHAT: Meet regularly to guide process • RESPONSIBILITIES: • Oversee project • Communicate with City government and elected officials • Approve vision, focus areas, outcomes, indicators, targets, and action strategies • Gather and analyze data for sustainability indicator benchmarks • Decide on overall strategies • Final editing and publishing of Sustainability Plan • Take Sustainability Plan to respective communities for approval • Coordinate implementation of Sustainability Plan in the communities • WORKGROUPS: • WHO: Local experts in project focus areas and motivated community representatives nominated by Steering Committee, Advisory Board and optional open call. • Number of workgroups will depend on identified focus areas • WHAT: Meet as needed to meet responsibilities • RESPONSIBILITIES: • Recommend sustainability indicators • Recommend sustainability targets • Recommend sustainability strategies and actions • Develop implementation measures based on assessments • ADVISORY BOARD: • WHO: Local leaders in business, environment, government, education, health, community nominated by Steering Committee • WHAT: Meet 5 times to provide input on key project milestones • RESPONSIBILITIES: • Represent their respective sector • Craft the Sustainability Vision Statement • Define project focus areas • Draft sustainability outcomes • Participate in workgroups • Approve final sustainability outcomes • Review and approve sustainability indicators and targets • Review and approve strategies and actions • Review and approve final plan • Motivate and lead implementation in the communities  and within sectors

Glossary of Sustainability Planning Terms • Sustainability: • the capacity to endure • the potential for long-term maintenance of well being • “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” --United Nations BrundtlandCommission • Vision: statement of the communities’ collective vision for themselves regarding Sustainability. • Mission: statement of the overall goal of the Woodward 5 Sustainability Planning Process • Focus Area: Broad topic area which the community identifies as critical to it’s future sustainability, such as energy, waste, economy, education, health, environment, public services, infrastructure, transportation, food etc. • Outcome: statement describing the desired future condition of the community that reflects sustainability. • Benchmarked Indicator: measure of the current condition that measures progress towards sustainability goals. Indicators are quantitative and reflect social, environmental, and economic conditions. • Target Indicator: desired future status of an indicator to indicate progress towards sustainability goal within a stated timeline. • Strategies & Actions: steps or measures that can be taken to move the community toward the desired Target, and ultimately, toward sustainability.

EXAMPLE Vision & Mission Statements VISION The communities of Rochester, Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills embrace and advance local sustainability, characterized by a vibrant economy, healthy natural environment and cohesive local community. MISSION The Tri-City Sustainability Program, composed of the Cities of Rochester, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills and Oakland County, seeks to advance sustainability through the individual and combined efforts of governments, businesses, institutions and residents.
