  3. INTRODUCTION Obsessive Compulsive Disorder better known as OCD is a brain based disorder in which people have recurring unwanted thoughts & sensations that makes them to something repetitively. It causes fear, worriedness, uneasiness & apprehensive in the person suffering from it. It is characterized by anxiety provoking ideas or obsessions that provokes the suffering person to make them to commit compulsion action to lessen their anxiety. • Obsession – Repetitive, Impulsive, Instructive ideas or thoughts. • Compulsion – Repetitive behaviours that are senseless and unrealistic.

  4. CATEGORIES There are no classified types or categories of OCD. But researchers suggest OCD in 4 main categories.

  5. SYMPTOMS OCD usually have both obsessive symptoms & compulsive symptoms. But it is also possible that the person suffering might have only obsessive symptoms or compulsive symptoms.

  7. CAUSES The cause of OCD have not fully understand. But there are 3 main theories • Biology – Biological OCD includes the result of changes in body’s natural chemistry or brain functions. • Genetics – OCD may have a genetics impact. But scientists or researchers are still not sure about it. • Learning – OCD behaviour can be learned from watching family members or gradually learned over time.

DIAGNOSIS There are 3 steps to diagnose Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Psychological Evaluation – This includes discussing the thoughts, feelings, symptoms & behaviour patterns of a person to determine he has obsessive compulsive disorder or not. • DSM-5 – The doctor might use a criteria from DSM-5, which is a classification of mental health disorders used by mental health professionals. • Physical Exam – This can be done to rule out any possibility of any physical problems that might be causing the symptoms.

  9. TREATMENT OCD treatment may not result in cure but it may help to control the symptoms. Depending on the severity of OCD some people need long-term, ongoing or intrusive treatment. The two main treatments of OCD are psychotherapy & medications

  10. COMPLICATIONS • Excessive time spent engaging in ritualistic behaviours. • Health issues • Difficulty attending work, school or social activities • Troubled relationships • Overall poor quality of life • Suicidal thoughts & behaviour
