  4. Bull Run (First Manassas) • Lincoln was pressured to attack the south • Jackson’s stand: given nickname “stonewall” • Union army retreated to Washington D.C. • Lincoln replaced McDowell with McClellan • Northerners realized war would be long and costly

Shiloh (Pittsburgh Landing) • Union attempt to control the Mississippi River • Confederate attacked and won the first day • Union counter-attacked and won the second day • “Hornet’s Nest” most intense location of fighting • Albert Sidney Johnston is killed in action (Lee’s most trusted general, next to Jackson) • Largest and bloodiest battle in American history until Antietam: 23,741 dead

  10. Monitor vs. Merrimac (Ironclads) • Merrimac– (abandoned Union frigate) clad with iron/steel plates and renamed USS Virginia • Monitor– invented by John Ericsson, made of iron/steel and had revolving turrets • “Ironclads” rammed into wooden ships and easily sunk them

Monitor vs. Merrimac (Ironclads) • Merrimac sunk ships at Hampton Roads • Monitor arrived for support • Two ships shelled each other for 4 hours (inconclusive) • Confederates were unable to break the Richmond blockade • Changed naval warfare worldwide • Union eventually out-built the Confederacy in ironclads
