  7. Cuban Revolution • Cuba under Spain’s control. • Spain put Cubans in concentration camps and over 200,000 prisoners • Cuba fought Spain many times in the 1800s for freedom. • Spanish sent thousands of soldiers to Cuba.

  8. U.S. desire to expand • Americans proud of US • Wanted country to grow • Wanted more land and sell their goods everywhere • If they defeated Spanish Empire, the US would get territory outside of north America. • Wanted Cuba and Puerto Rico as part of the United States.

  11. Sinking of the USS Maine • US warship stationed in Havana, Cuba • Exploded • Killed over 260 Americans • Yellow Press ran headlines immediately blaming the Spanish for the explosion • The real reason why it blew up is still unknown • *SPARKED IMMEDIATE WAR WITH THE SPANISH!*

Spanish-American War (1898) • Lasted only four months • U.S. won—turned America into an imperial power • Treaty of Paris • Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico, Guam, and Philippines belonged to US • Cuba gained its independence • Cuba signed the Platt Amendment • If Cuba wanted to have any treaties with other countries, it would have to ask America first. • allowed America to intervene into Cuban affairs even during times of peace • allowed America to keep navy ships in its bay (Guantanamo Bay).
